Now look what you made me go and do?

I saw this knife on sale at www.workingknives.com and I picked one up.

I have a 1st generation - which I love - but this one is in Cocobolo and is the 3rd generation. The handle is a little wider (.150) and the steel is a little thinner (.0010). The blade came to me deceptively sharp but still very much with grind marks. I gave about an hour on the diamond stones and got it VERY close to perfect. It is VERY sharp now - but will be even sharper when I am done.

This is the knife, I am thinking. It is more comfortable in the hand, seems better balanced, and slices better. This is certainly a keeper. Now what to do with the 1st gen? ;)

I got a dangler sheath with it, which is awesome, and it even fit's my 1st generation's Kydex sheath. Very cool.

I will take more and better pics when I get it properly sharpened.

You could send me the 1st gen to try out! I've been looking around at some "real" scandi ground blades (real for me is full tang... I'm not hating on moras! I promise!), and I'd love to fondle Kosters. I never got to see one of his bushcraft blades when I used to visit the shop!

You could also do a passaround with it!

I got one these last week also. This is now my 3rd Koster Bushcrafter. This has become one of my favorite knives. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

peripatew, shoot me an PM if you are interested in trying one out. I've got a first gen I'd be happy to let you try out. I've got another, so it's not like I would be without a Koster Bushcraft (which I promised myself would never happen after I tried one out for the first time).

If you can take one or got one I'd love to see a pic of the new one and the old one side by side looking down at the spine. I understand the new ones have thicker scales and more contouring but I've never seen the 2 compared.

KILLER job by the way polishing out that bevel.

I think it makes a big difference in how smooth they cut:thumbup::cool:

I'd be interested in a comparison shot as well. Mappers sending me a 1gen to test out (woo!).

I will take comparison pics - there is a difference - I love the feel.

Give me some time to get it sharp and then I will take quality photos.

How does this knife compare with the Skookum knife by Garcia?

I have Gen 1 Koster and Skookum. They are similar.

No butt cap on the Koster, I like the Skookum blade shape a bit better and the blade is a bit thinner so it is better for slicing IMO. I think it cuts a little deeper when you are pushing away from you.

The Koster has tougher steel for a slightly lower price. Comes to a bit of a finer point than the Skookum. The Koster is lighter. I think the Koster feels better cutting with the end of the blade than the Skookum.

Can't go wrong with either. I think the Koster feels more compact but is pretty close or the same size.

So TF, what did you use to sharpen up that beautiful knife?

I've got a 3V Bushcraft that I'd like to polish up a bit. I've got a fine/coarse DMT stone coming and I wondered what you may have used. Thanks.

Very nice knife. I used to have a gen 1 and it was a bit too thin in the handle for me. I am looking forward to your review!

Okay - I have it SHAVING sharp. I got this one right out of the box. It took about 4 hours to get all the grind marks out and get it to my liking. It absolutely wipes away hair. Sharpest knife I have ever owned. I will get good pics and comparison photos in the next day or so. Then a full review with comparison.

DMT Dia-sharp Coarse, Fine, then Extra Fine. It is a little more mirror now - but you can see sharpening scratches for days. As the other thread I posted on this revealed - tryin to mirror polish 3V is folly! ;)

I simply took my time - worked the stones, then stropped on bare leather then jean material. Is is ungodly sharp.
