Well priced steel... Link

Their prices are great. Their service is good. I am not so sure of their steel. I ordered 3, or 4 bars of PG 01 from them. All came in with multiple bends in it, and a few small pockets in the surface of two of the bars. The ground surface also looked just a tad rougher than what I usually buy. The bars were packaged very well, so I assume they were bent before packing. Is there a chance, seeing how as their steel is almost half the price of low priced 01, that this steel has oriental origins, as in, maybe Chinese?? The price is certainly tempting, but I am hesitant to buy from them again, because I want to be sure my customers are getting quality steel, even if I have to pay more for it. It only takes a few unhappy customers to ruin a reputation.

wow, those prices are cheap. i would be interested in what others have to say that have used them as well.

LRB What sizes did you order?
I have gotten bent steel even from Admiral if they sheared it from a sheet. Steel I ordered is for a Filing jig so it will never see any knife use. 3/8" thick
Have used O1 for many years so if it is crap I will post, it if not will post that as well.

I ordered PG-01 in 3/32", and 5/32". It wasn't sheared from sheet. It was packed very well. Taped to boards. My concern was most to do with the pockets in the surface. These were not dents, unless done before PG. They were open pockets after the PG was done. Small, but still should not be there. I had to straighten every blank I cut from this steel. I have never seen this in other PG-01. Maybe an occassional slight curve in a 36" piece, but these were snakey curved. Every blank I cut had to be restraightened, and reground to bring them to true.

I've never had any problems with steel from Flatground.com.
Their prices are very good as well. Not as good as this Amtek site, but at least I know what I'm getting.

sweet thanks.. I need something to get me going in the right direction as I'm planning to make my very first knife soon:confused: and I'll need all the help I can get..

Damn, nice find on steel! This is my TAG for the outcome:thumbup:

I just emailed them to ask about return info etc. I hope its legit, this will save myself and several other makers some bucks.

Keep us posted on your order!

Chris

Well the Beauty of low prices tarnishes quickly when they charge more for shipping than the product.
Bought 18" piece of 3/8 x 1 1/4" piece of O1 for $18.55 looks good so far right.
You can't get the shipping costs from the website (Suspect for good reason) before you pay for the order.
Shipped VIA UPS shipping charge of $18... What a joke
Sent the salesman an Email to see if we can do something about this. Waiting for his answer.

This is the reason I will never order from MSC again, they have a Hidden 20lb min shipping charge.

What a crock of shit......I have had a cart full for 3 days......called once and emailed twice, no return call or reply to my emails. I asked about a shipping quote, and if they offer returns on damaged goods.

Let us know what you find out on the shipping.

Thanks for the update!

Chris

I've ordered tool steel from Amtek twice recently. The first time it came in a hard cardboard tube and was straight. The second time it came wrapped in cardboard and two of the bars were bent a little. Nothing a little tweak in the vise wouldn't fix.. The surfaces of all of the bars i've gotten were fine. No pitting noticed. I called them and asked if the steel was foreign and they said no, that they bought from two suppliers, one of which was in Pennsylvania. I'm assuming this is quality stuff as Amtek is an industrial tooling supplier based in Michigan. In fact, I would trust this steel more than I would steel from some place called "metalsdepot.com" or such. This is just my two cents. Bear in mind that I haven't heat treated any of it yet. Also, shipping for my last 3 bars 36" in length was just 10$, so it might have to do with location.

The 01 I bought seemed to HT fine. I don't remember what the shipping was, but if it was high, I would remember.

Thanks for your input guys! I have about $170 worth of steel in my cart and just didn't want to get hit hard with an outrageous shipping charge and then fight them for months trying to get a refund. Not saying that has happened but as you all know it varies from company to company.

The price on there steel is pretty damn nice compared to others. Just a little skeptical when you can't get a return call or a simple reply to an email.

I might just bite the bullet and see what shows up on my shipping charge.

Thanks again for the input fellas,

Chris

Good to give them time to respond on these things, here is a copy of the Email Carl (Salesman) sent:
Robert, I want to thank you for bringing this to my attention. We simply charge what the shipping facility charges us. That being said, I too find this excessive. I went to www.UPS.com and it shows the actual amount to ship that pkg should be $10.57. You can go there put it in yourself. It was a 3 lb package shipping from 60455 zip. I will drop you a note later on getting you refunded on the difference. I will make sure this doesnt happen to you or other customers in the future. Amtek is here to serve , not to take advantage of people, thats how our business has grown. I let the people in Bridgeview know my displeasure and I am sorry this wasnt caught befor it was sent to you.
Thank you again, Carl Drife 1-800-334-1660

Fast response and Pro attitude so far...
Will see how it plays out
Might give Carl a call first before placing a large order.

I've purchase PFG A-2 from Nick in the past. Top-quality steel; great prices.

Shipped fast BTW. Steel showed up yesterday and looked at it Today. Nice clean and was backed by a 1/2" thick piece of wood in a HD box. Would venture a bet that if it all this nice and HT well I will be buying more.
Soon as the refund for partial shipping gets posted to my acct it will get posted here.

Nick what is your price on a 3/8 x 1 1/4 x 18" piece of O1 PG?

I have bought from amtek had no problems no dents works great and is cheap.
Anthony
