For the last 3 weeks a friend and myself have been restoring a cedar canoe that he bought for $125. We think it was a 16' Prospector from Stewart River Boatworks which retails for $4495:eek: http://www.stewartriver.com/prospector.html There was some hull damage but a little work took care of it nicely. A fresh coat of canvas, epoxy, some paint and it was looking like new. Last week we took it out to his cabin to test it out, no leaks but it was too windy to do any paddling. The plan was to go out this weekend to do some fishing and hang out with friends. Today he gets off work early to find out someone stole the canoe. They cut the lock off , took the plate off the trailer and drove away. Since they took the licence plate off the trailer I cant see the police being able to recover the canoe.

This would be the first time I would be able to do any fishing in the last 8 years. I was really looking forward to this trip.:(

And to top it off there is a thunderstorm warning for the lake but we are headed out in an hour anyways with hopes the weather tommorrow will be nicer.

If anyone in the Edmonton area happens to see a canoe with forest green metallic paint on the hull and a 12' trailer with plywood sides painted black and pinstipping on the side could you please email me at ghostguy6 (@) gmail.com
Thanks.

Man that sucks big time. On the (potentially) bright side, if he has renters or home owners insurance he should be able to get the $4500 replacement value from the insurance company. Insurance doesn't need to know what you paid for it, only what the replacement cost is.

That really sucks. I hope the police catch those bastages. Were you able to get any pics of the canoe or trailer before it was stolen? You could print up some flyers to put around town.

That really sucks. I hope that you are paid back for this loss, somehow. Whether it be the canoe returned, or the money for a new one.

I dont have any pictures of it, I was planning on getting some this weekend when the girls come out. Ill ask my friend about the insurance, im not really to sure how it works for a boat

That does suck, but how many of that same type of canoe could be in the area? I don't know much about this stuff, but...I do watch the detective programs on TV :D

Call the police and file the report anyway, if the word is out and they pull over some drunken asshole, perhaps you will get the canoe back. Or, they might bust someone for stealing something else, you know, like a tent while the tent owner is in the outhouse or something.

The really sad thing is, this is someone that knew exactly what they were stealing, you know what I mean? Sometimes, thieves love what we love. This is why I trust NO ONE in campgrounds or the trail. NO ONE.

He called the police, the thing is all he knows it was stolen sometime between saturday and friday. I could be anywhere by now. The area is full of cottages and small lakes so there are thousands of canoes around. Without trying to sound racist, there is a native reserve on the other side of the lake so I think tonight I will drive around there to look. I know stolen quads and boats have been found there before.

That's bad:thumbdn:

Were there any other people who knew about you two guys re-doing this canoe?

Sorry for your loss man, that sounds like a great project. I hope the thieves get some sort of justice laid upon them.

If you want to play Sherlock Holmes see if you have any samples of the trailer tire prints around your friend's place. It might help you make up your mind if you find a likely looking trailer on somebody's property. You might be able to get to tracks when you can't easily get to the trailer. If you got a little clumsy with varnish or epoxy you might have left some permanent finger prints that would help you to prove ownership if you ever found a similar canoe.

I would bet that the thief is local and has stolen things before. If you ask around you may be able to get a few suggestions of where to look.

Hey! I'm part Cree! (And Cherokee and another tribe that I don't know 'cause my momma didn't know the tribe of Indian her one grandfather was.) Part German and Irish too...all of them have thieves! I'm sure if you get ripped off in Germany or Ireland, there is a place around a town you go to look for the thieves. Nothing racist or bigoted about it...

My friend had his 6 month old 150 Mariner outboard stolen off his boat at his lakeside cottage on a large chain of lakes. They even got the cables without cutting anything. He went out for dinner about dusk and returned about four hours later and it was gone.

I hate thieves!

Awwww, bummer..:(

I want a Canoe really bad, I know how you must feel. :(

I hope you recover it bro...

I live in Edmonton and will keep an eye out for your canoe and trailer. Where did it get stolen at, may I ask ?
