Well, this sucks.

Here is the lockup at it's current state. I tightened the hell out of the screws last night as someone suggested, and it seemed to move a tiny bit, but it's still at 99% and sticks.

Sorry the pic is so crappy, I'm on campus and I only have my cell phone. The lock bar covers about 99% of the tang, although there is still no play.

Just as a reference, Crimson, this is my small Sebenza with the birth card reading August 30, 2011.

Wow what a difference. Thanks Thomason.

I have the worst luck with knives. I had this problem with striders also. Sent my very first SMF back within a week of getting it.

Just another reference point.

This is 2007 "web-sight" regular small. Bought as NOS, not much carried. 50% lockup.

And this is April 2011 small Star-benza. Bought new, EDCed fairly often. 75-85% lockup.

When I sent my BG42 large regular that had about 95% lockup like yours, I got this message from Heather. Absolutely no blade play BTW.

Our lock should never move over 100%. We heat treat the lock to strengthen as provided the knife isn’t abused it should last forever without going over.

Coelancath, your starbenza lockup is just like my April 2011 small, maybe not in "spec", but I ain't complainin cause the knife works.

sorry to hear about the issue, ive seen even an H sebenza with 100% lock up.It happens to the best of them. imo 50% lock up is perfect, if a knife is anything over 75% i get worried about it developing play after use( because theres no room for movment except vertically). Chris is a great guy though he'll take care of you. Oh and is there really a change in the lock up now? Because i might just have to buy old sebenzas from now on if there is.

That's my take as well. None of mine has any play whatsoever, and Heather's message is assuring that there will be no play in the future unless some serious abuse was done. I don't flick open, and of course I don't whack my blades like some a-hole on the tube. If my Seb ever develops a play (I doubt it), I'm sure CRK folks will take care of it.

That said, I'd be a bit uneasy if a brand new Seb that I just bought had 99% lockup like the OP. Then again, I'm sure Heather will take care of that.

Except if it was a strider with that kind of late lockup it would have massive up and down play with a big fat black cap on the blade stop as well . I'm sure CRK will take care of you and I agree that for a brand new sebenza that lockup seems a tad out of spec. Hopefully this experience doesnt turn you off from CRK because that would be a shame. Just seems like really bad luck.

What does your lockbar face look like, the part where they heattreat? I remember a thread awhile back where someone had received a Seb with a bad heattreat on the lockbar and it did the same thing that your knife did if I can recall.

If it looks all marred up that would be the culprit which they could/would replace the lock side of your knife to get it back into spec.

Just some thoughts.

I've checked it out and from what I can see it appears to be smooth and shiny, almost polished looking.

Yeah my SMF had some serious up/down play. It came back absolutely perfect though, absolutely the smoothest and most solid locking knife I have ever held.

This hasn't turned me away from CRK at all. I am actually looking at getting an Umnum pretty soon. I still love my seb, and I'm sure I'll love it even more when it's fixed up. I guess I do just have really bad luck.

I have a speculation about why there is a sudden change in the lockup, and it has to do with a certain youtuber named neptuneknives.

I hope it's just coincidence. After meeting Mr. Reeve last year, I can't believe he would let one youtube troll get under his skin.

Especially this guy.

I would send it back and request, typical 50% lockup.

that video is so funny, he can't even lift up 50lbs with one hand, let alone 2. i feel more sorry for his manhood, rather than the test. good laugh :p

After watching that video I think he might seriously have some sort of mental disability. I also LOL'd at him struggling with 50lbs. Poor guy.

What the h is up with that Neptune video....

I would hope that no one would take anything that child has to say for a grain of salt ..

You see it!? Basically he has no brain...or muscle

In my experience with Sebenza 21's the lockups have all been mostly later lockups. 65-80% is really more normal than not. Rarely if ever
do you see an early lockup of like 15-30% on Sebenzas. The lockup in the picture of the knife on the left is my micarta and what I would consider
a perfect lockp of about 75%. It came like that new and hasnt moved.
A lockup of 90% > is probably not ideal but if the knife functions properly and the lock doenst move over any farther than I dont see too much of a
problem. But since your knife has a sticky lockup I would definitley send it in. A sticky lockup bugs me a lot more than a late lockup.

Yeah I met him at Blade, he is definitely a man with a strong personality. I asked for a picture with him and he obliged, reluctantly. I'm sure he gets bugged for stuff like that constantly, so he handles it better than I would probably. Figured I'd add the pic. :D

Nice pic man!

On the other thread, Chris Reeve stated: "It does not matter how much our lock comes across as long as there is no up and down blade play. Our locks do not wear, unless abused, our knives are fitted properly and do not need to wear in as some others need to."

So as I said before, the knife works, use it...don't worry be happy :)
