Well this was unexpected..

Here is my poor man's ZT with the velcro strap attachment because the knife has no detent.

I think i've EDC'd this blade for a couple of years.

I never got into the expensive knife habit. However, I did go the route of too many knives, based on the fact that I really only carry a small number of them with any regularity. I broke the knife buying habit a couple of years ago and just use the ones I have now.

With this being said what other “iconic” cheap EDC knives have you all carried throughout the years?
So to answer the actual question: I carry a Case Peanut pretty regularly, and usually some other inexpensive Case slipjoint or a Victorinox SAK.

I have to admit that I am looking upwards in price but I wouldn't dismiss something budget friendly. I guess I just have moderately expensive taste which is frustrating at times. Glad I hate wearing watches offsets the knives at least in theory :D

Until I got my HD7 the Kershaw Emerson Cqc7k was altogether a more practical carry knife than my real Emersons. It was just thinner and thus more comfortable to carry.

Sometimes cheap knives can bring us great joy.

So, to continue with my analogy, I suppose one could own a vast collection of Audemars Piguets and Patek Philippes, and that is not going to teach one that a cheapo digital chronograph tells time just as accurately. :)

Expensive taste in watches. An appreciation of horology and drop shutty.

Yeah I think I finally hit my budget as far as “expensive” knives go for my taste. The last purchase I made was a Shirogorov and I think I’m about maxed out. Couldn’t see spending anymore. So now I have to cover to other end of the spectrum.
If true, you're missing out on a lot of good, solid, well-made knives.
Funny you actually don’t think I own nice quality knives huh? Thought I made this apparent in my original post.

Sorry for the double post, but thanks for all the actual knife recommendations, I’ll be sure to check them all out once I’m off work.

Ehh, I’ve seen all BM can offer I feel and nothing strikes my fancy unless I buy a Griptillian and have custome scales made for it. But I’m not looking to scratch that sort of itch just yet.

Care to share what this is?

Lol, don’t get me wrong you’ll never see this in my rotation but as stated earlier I’ll throw it on my system just to break in some stones.
Kershaw Blackout, $55

Drop shutty?

I guess my point is that I see lot of this thing where people amass more-expensive knives and feel that that somehow gives them expertise. Especially on YouTube.

(Actually I just saw the claim made on a subforum here today...a member claiming that he knows more about knives because he "...has the most knives that cost 1k or more." )

i just happen to think that is the exact opposite of the truth. Seems like the people around here who appear to know the most are the ones with less expensive knives. Show me somebody with a Case or a old beat up old Remington fixed blade...those are the guys who know their stuff.

A Shiro 111 3D CF (etcpp ...lol) is a grail knife of mine, but I don't think I'll end up getting one, I think my threshold is in the ~500 Euro (650$ region) and it's gonna be staying there. Yeah a 1000$ Shiro is great, but is it twice as great as two very very nice Reates or three WE's? It's not even quantity over quality at that level anymore, it's just exclusivity and I can live without that really well.

PS: Funny enough, I've been checking out some Budget options too that I want to add to my user range, specifically a Rat in D2 and get my mom one of the nicer opinels for the garden.

Interesting thread. I was wondering last fall if I'd reached that same saturation point. I've got one drawer of sub-$75 knives, several dozen "mid-priced" models ($100-250), and almost as many mid-techs. I was buying both in the mid-priced and mid-tech ranges, but had kinda slowed down on the upper end. I still use and carry knives across all those spectrums, but tend to have more users in the higher-priced tiers with 3 of my CRKs, 2 of the Shiros, and an RHK in my regular work-carry rotation. Those are users, not beaters, as there's always a beater in my left front for work.

My less expensive (and more brightly colored) knives get carried in the woods and fields when we're up at our Vermont place or working in the brush here at home. I don't want to lose any knife, but would feel much less angst missing my Endura/Delica than my MP1 or Olamic. That said. I have many mid-priced and even cheaper knives that I like no less than some that cost anywhere from 2 to 20 times as much.

Anyway, back to the saturation point I thought I'd reached, I figured I'd sell off a bunch to finance future purchases, but found myself only wanting to move out and consolidate the mid-priced pieces, selling two or three to pick up one and bought another Hinderer, CRK, Shiro, a GM3, and a Cheburkov in fairly rapid succession. So, I'm finding that while I still like and value my mid-priced knives--I've still got a lotta them and keep many as clean as some of my mid-techs--there's something about the feel in hand and use of a mid-tech that's just more satisfying. That said, there's still plenty of room in my rotation for a well-sharpened PM2 or 710.

Every time I think I've got this hobby/habit down, off I go on another tangent. Just a guy that likes knives. Sigh....

I'm with you on that maxed-out threshold, though. The most-expensive of my Shiros was a few of those back (and well-under 4 figures) and I don't see myself getting up there again, but, except for the odd $100-150 knife, I've kinda settled into the $300-500 range.

How many of you here have felt satisfied enough with your collection to finally look at cheaper options

Ha, ha, ha all I own is cheeper knives.
But
I have had the Onatrio Rat 1 in my shopping cart for years. It is a very well respected knife that has proven its self for sure.

I think these days I tend toward higher dollar inexpensive knives. Think $300 or less.
I like a little more handle, pivot and lock quality.

THEN spend a stupid amount of time grinding the blade thinner and more like the Rat.
hahahaha

Actually the knife that did it for me in the realm of the Rat is the Case Sod Buster.
I don't actually need a lock and when I get one I want one that is fun to fool with.
The area of the Sod Buster down near the pivot is better for how I use a knife than the Rat.
The cut out for the liner lock is in my way (removes some footing for my finger that I want) and the bulge for the "finger guard" is in the way in the opposite I want to put my finger there and can't and would probably end up grinding it off.

Note the Sod Buster in those areas. Very similar blade but better grip for me for how I use the knife which doesn't include stabbing or actual feather stick like carving though I do paring like trimming.

Bottom line the Ontario Rat 1 is one of the best knives out there for the money but I won't be buying one.
Will I now remove it from my shopping cart ?
. . . ummmmmmm . . . I will probably leave 'er in there "just in case".
