Wenger alox Standard Issue?

My SI has become my edc without me consciously deciding it. It has just the right amount of utility without being excessive. I have edc'd multitools for years, so this is quite a conversion for me!

I do still carry a peanut at work because of the limitations of what dress pants pockets will comfortably hold.

It does, but that is because it is a Pioneer (civilian model of the Soldier) with the Dutch military issue code engraved on the engraving panel on the back.

I thought the Pioneer had a lanyard attachment rather than a bail. The engraving panel is also slightly different.

I received a Wenger Standard Issue in the mail today. There's not much difference between it and the Victorinox Soldier. Although most of my other Wenger Swiss army knives have weaker backsprings than my Victorinox Swiss army knives, this one has good snap. Also the blade has a better edge than the others. I haven't tried resharpening it yet though. It was manufactured in '04 (one year before Victorinox bought Wenger). Maybe the difference in quality is due to the military specs as has been suggested previously. Regardless of the reason, I'm very happy with the knife and I may start carrying it instead of the Victorinox Soldier. My first Swiss army knife (and first multi-tool) was made by Wenger and it brings back fond memories.

I just picked up a post-2008 Wenger Standard Issue knife (without a year stamp).
According to pictures and reviews, the Wenger SI used to have a pointier awl with a less rounded cross-section & a somewhat rougher finish compared to the Victorinox alox Soldier.
The knife I got seems identical to the Victorinox alox Soldier in every aspect, except the tang stamp and the bail. The awl has the rounded Victorinox awl tip and cross-section.
Could it be, that they used some Victorinox parts to assemble the most recent batches of the Wenger SI? Given that the Elsener family owns both Victorinox and Wenger, that wouldn’t be very surprising.
