Wenger Ranger vs. Victorinox Rucksack, Outrider, etc.

. . . it cost me something like $26 US plus shipping. I don't recall the exact total but it was less than $40. Check out these Google search results--there are probably a few good vendors and prices in there.

Wait! You can buy it HERE for $25.63 US plus $13.82 US shipping for a grand total of $39.45

I finally got a chance to handle one of the Wenger Rangers the other day. It's not a bad looking knife, fit and finish were OK and it has some characteristics which I like. The Ranger is bigger than the corresponding Victorinox series, has a longer and wider blade (in a clip point rather than a drop point, which I consider to be a plus) and a longer saw.

I didn't like the lockup, though. Both the Wenger and the Victorinox have a sliding button on one side that activates the locking mechanism. The type of lock is different, however. The Victorinox has a pin which slides into place when the lock is activated. The Wenger has a sort of liner lock: the sliding switch pushes the liner out in such a way as to block the blade. This liner lock didn't inspire my confidence. It looked to me as if an accident bump to the sliding switch might cause the liner to dislodge, whereas it would be harder to make the Victorinox lock fail under similar circumstances. Plus, the Wenger liner lock looked like it would gunk up easily in muddy/dirty conditions. Not exactly what I look for in an knife that I would use exclusively in the outdoors.

Bottom line, I didn't buy the knife. If Wenger were to use another type of locking mechanism, I would buy the Ranger without hesitation. As it is, I'll continue to use my Victorinoxs.

I have a normal size Victorinox. It’s the model before the Camper. No toothpick or tweezers and the older logo. But after using it for around five years I bought a Wenger Ranger whit the same tool items. Just because it has a longer locking blade and Vic didn’t had one at that time.

I like the Ranger a lot. It just a bit larger, high quality SAK. IMO the same quality as the any other Vic. No damage or singes of rust on it, even after heavy disabusing use. The saw is still very sharp and the knife holds its edge good.

At the moment I’m planning to sell it to a good friend of mine, he wants a good big SAK for all his life, like the Wenger Ranger. I only sell it because I replaced it whit bit smaller, one-hand opening EDC SAK. I hear you think…but that’s a Vic! Yes it is. But I still highly recommend the Ranger. I don’t even have the courage of selling bs knife’s to friends.
