I finally got a chance to handle one of the Wenger Rangers the other day. It's not a bad looking knife, fit and finish were OK and it has some characteristics which I like. The Ranger is bigger than the corresponding Victorinox series, has a longer and wider blade (in a clip point rather than a drop point, which I consider to be a plus) and a longer saw.
I didn't like the lockup, though. Both the Wenger and the Victorinox have a sliding button on one side that activates the locking mechanism. The type of lock is different, however. The Victorinox has a pin which slides into place when the lock is activated. The Wenger has a sort of liner lock: the sliding switch pushes the liner out in such a way as to block the blade. This liner lock didn't inspire my confidence. It looked to me as if an accident bump to the sliding switch might cause the liner to dislodge, whereas it would be harder to make the Victorinox lock fail under similar circumstances. Plus, the Wenger liner lock looked like it would gunk up easily in muddy/dirty conditions. Not exactly what I look for in an knife that I would use exclusively in the outdoors.
Bottom line, I didn't buy the knife. If Wenger were to use another type of locking mechanism, I would buy the Ranger without hesitation. As it is, I'll continue to use my Victorinoxs.
