WOW looks to be the near perfect SAK. Everything you need nothing you dont.

I carry the fireman which is similar but the second one looks to be an upgrade, nice.

Thanks

I looked at that first one for a while, though it looked pretty much ideal. They are owned by Victorinox now anyway, right? Quality should be just as good. They are a bit on the pricey side compared to their Vic counterparts, though.

I've used the model 56 you show there at the top, I just wish they would use the same thumb-hole blade on it like the model 58 on the bottom for one hand opening. They are a decent knife for the price really, given the proper application. The nice thing about them is that the blades lock with a liner lock. The Swiss insignia is the button for the release.

The Vic Trekker is basically the same knife, but a bit cheaper. It, I have not used however.

I had at a look at both but I find the Vic ones more asthetically (spelling?) pleasing.
The Wengers grip patterns, curves and corners just dont appeal to me. But other than the looks its a fine knife, a knife store he had a few of the new Wenger models and they seem snappier and you gotta love the NO- serrations.

I started a thread on these a while ago, it didn't get many responses though.
I can't find the thread at the moment because the search engine is down AND it also won't let me look for threads i've started.
I will buy a Ranger sometime in the new year and post some pics + comments.

No "search" and no "new posts" buttons?
Man the search is mostly useless but i do miss the "new posts" button!

Don't worry tholiver I remember the post and the pics!! Sometimes that is common on many of the forums! I remember Bear Grylls using one on his switzerland or one of the snowy mountain episodes. If Bear used it it must be good........j/k That knife looks okay but I find many people are in the vic or the wenger camp no flippy floppy!

I hardly miss the search because it usually doesn't work well, or often at all.
I do miss the "new posts" button and the ability to search for things like threads started by a user etc.

Victorinox do a version that is exactly the same, called the OH Trekker, or Military (depending on which country).

It has the one-hand opening locking main blade. The flathead screwdriver also locks.

I have the OH Trekker, great knife.
But the One handed Ranger line does not have a model that duplicates exactly the tools of the OH Trekker. Well they do sort of but it has the tools of the trekker PLUS a seatbelt cutter blade that adds another layer to the thickness.

Oh yeah and the Ranger body and blade are a nice bit longer than the Trekker.

:)

I like the 172-- scissors, saw, Phillips screwdriver. They missed the boat a little for a good woods knife-- drop the serrations, add one-hand opening, swpa out the Phillips for an awl with a sewing eye.

The 71 is mostly the same, but has a plain blade and a $%^&# corkscrew instead of the Phillips.

I went with a Vic Outrider-- like a Trekker with scissors.

I would say I am a flip flopper, I own many more vics, but just cause they are easier to come by. My first sak was a wenger, and it pi$$es me off when people scoff at them, they are by no means cheapo reproductions.
I like that first one, the curved blade in the second looks too "unuseful" if that's a word.
I have heard the grips are very ergonomic though.

Yeah that second blade turned me away as well.
If they made a OH Ranger that duplicated the OH Trekker i'd buy it.
Or if it must be a four layer then give me scissors instead of that extra curved blade.Actually i'd prefer a corkscrew instead of a phlips as well.lol

The pics in the Sosak article shows that the 4 layer Wenger OH Ranger is much thicker than the 4 layer OH Fireman. that seems to be due to the Ranger grips being thicker but as Liam said they do look more ergonomic than the Trekkers.
I've been procrastinating but I am finally going to order my Wenger 61 Ranger this week, thats the two layer version (Blade/canopener/bottleopener/awl/corkscrew).
I am getting a Leatherman XE6 for christmas, i think the Ranger 61 will complement the Leatherman nicely.
I'll post pics when i get it.
:)

I like the way it looks for sure.
The only thing that I don't like about the large locking Vics is the handle design.
Since it's more narrow toward the blade and fatter at the butt, my hand tends to slide toward the blade when push-cutting...and there's no forward guard to stop it.
If the knife was slick with blood and guts, I can see that it would not be very difficult to cut myself.

If you need to pushcut and your hand is slippery grasp it more with your last two fingers towards the incurve/groove at the butt end with the knife butt kinda in the hollow crook of your hand. Fine control the front with thumb and forefinger and middle finger, also put your forefinger or thumb on the back/spine (or side panels depending on how you are cutting) for extra control. If you hold it that way while thrusting with the butt end of the knife in the hollow of your hand will usually prevent your hand sliding forward on the blade.
At least that works for me! Everybody's different so
mileage may vary.........
