It's my understanding that newspaper was used as insulation/wallpaper in older places like this. Some of the dates are from 1910 and up here is the best shots I could get

Great pictures. It's amazing they never burned down the old homestead using that fireplace. Interesting way to cook burgers.

Please explain the onion-burger. They look awesome!!!

Not so much a burger as it is a meat ball, I read about it in a issue of "The Backwoodsman" the original recipe calls for the hollowed out part of the onion to be diced up and added to the hamburger, I'm not a huge fan of onions so I leave it out. It still has a nice oniony taste to it though just from being cooked inside the onion. you can also cook eggs this way by cutting off just the top of the onion and hollowing it out instead of cutting it in half, and you can also substitute an orange for an onion

Looks like a great place to camp!

Good to see the knives being put to good use.

Thanks for the pics:thumbup:

Very, very nice! Looks as though you gave that Warden a good workout! Sweet FBM too!

Thanks for the pics! Gets me excited about heading out as soon as the weather gets a little warmer! (55 degrees and raining right now... )

The little pocket knife.... Is that one of the Kershaw Ken Onion Flipper knives? (A Scallion or something??) Model is a 1620 or something.... I Dunno. Nice knives though.

yeah its my buddies Kershaw I think it is a Scallion. tough little knife:thumbup:

WV,

Beautiful !

Copperheads ?

Metal detect old homeplace ? (I bet you find silver coins and wheats, old jewelry)

Arrowheads in plowed areas ?

Signs of much older dwellings on hill tops or around very large oak trees ?

Robbie Roberson. ;)

Have been fortunate not to stumble on to any copperheads yet this year, And I do not currently own a metal detector although its on the list of things I need/want. I have no doubt that there are some relics buried up there on the farm near the old homeplace. As far as I know there are no plowed areas(its a cattle farm) about 500 acres pasture and about 2200 acres of timber. Its a really big farm.

Used to use the same Idea as the Hobo stove as a kid. We'd cook soup in it in the evening and fry eggs in the morning. Had to wash the soot off, but it worked. We just set the thing over the coals instead of making a little fire. It was a summer night tradition for many a summer. good to be reminded thanks!

i take it you just set the onion on some coals and leave it alone for a bit? How long? Damn im hungry.

Yeah just stick it in the coals and leave it, maybe turning it once and it takes about an hour to cook all the way through according to how hot your fire is
