....................................................MYSELF!!!

So I was maneuvering the rental boat back to the dock, when I put my hand on the bench I was sitting on to adjust my seating position. Unfortunately my wifes broken back Rapala was already using that area of the bench and I got two points of the front treble hook stuck in my hand. Fortunately one of them didn't go past the barb, although pretty close, but the other one did.

I lost my "free minute" because I didn't have room to use the cutters on my Leatherman, and it took the guy at the docks forever to find a suitable pair of dikes.

Finally, I got the lure cut off of my hand so I could poke the point back out of my hand and thread it out. I tried to do this right there on the dock, but man your skin is darn resilient, and I couldn't get it to poke through, and had to finally stop when I started getting faint. I didn't want to pass out and fall in the lake, then I'd have a whole new set of problems, lol. Come to think of it, I'm not sure why I got so faint, perhaps I was a little dehydrated from being in the sun all day with only beer and Pepsi to drink.

I elected to just go home and do this in comfort. With my dad holding a piece of potato over the skin were I was trying to poke it through, I used my leatherman to push on the shank part to poke the point back out of my hand. Man o man was it hard to get that point to come back out. It went in easy enough, but I had to really crank down to get it to puncture my skin from the inside.

Sorry, I didn't get any pics while it was still in my hand, but here is the hook, next to it's entrance and exit holes, although they are hardly visible. If you look close they are above the hook, stratling the bend in the hook.

The day wasn't all bad. My dad caught a nice 2-3lb. rainbow, and it sure was nice to be outside on such a great day, even got a little sunburnt. Oh, sorry all you north eastern guys.:p

I carried my Mora 510 while fishing (knife on top):

But the fish was cleaned with the knife I made for my wife:

P.S. So now I pose a question regarding survival. If you got a hook stuck in you what would you do?

If it was in my hand like this, I would leave it, as it would have been near impossible if my dad hadn't been there to put pressure on my skin. You are likely to get rescued within a week and then you can go to the hospital and let them deal with it. If you aren't rescued, the hook will work itself out eventually. I don't think it is worth risking passing out especially since you probably won't be well hydrated or fed. Just wipe the area down with and alcohol pad, or some antiseptic, then wrap it up so it doesn't get snagged, or anything.

If it was anywere else, yes, I would just do what I did and thread it out.

TIP: leave the shank as long as possible. You do not want to lose the whole hook inside your hand. And if you can't thread it out, you will have to cut it out, which will be much worse.

I have heard to push the tip through and snip off the tip+barb that way you have something to use for leverage ie the rest of the hook. Also I have heard of a trick with string but I don`t know how it`s done.

Well, neither of those methods would have worked for me. The hook was too deep to get the whole treble hook off of the lure without a lot of unnecessary pain. So, I had to cut it which didn't leave a long shank to use for the "snatch" method. Plus, I don't know if I like that method, seems like a lot more damage would be done to you from ripping a barb back the wrong way.

Secondly, the point was under my skin and I had already cut the shank, so once I got the point and barb to poke through my skin, it was practically out already, just keep pulling the point until it's out.

OWWW!!! I hate hooks through the skin!!!

But I do feel pretty cool on account of the use of the term "free minute!"

Man, I've watched my dad push a hook through like that before...I don't like watching it! I guess one upside for him is that he sharpens his hooks like a woodworker sharpens chisels...they are little daggers so they probably push through pretty easily.

Still... OWWWW!!!! I hate hooks through the skin!!!

I have used the heavy fishing line method (as shown in the link above) before on my father. He had a treble deeply embeded in his hand about the same area that you did from a crankbait. It worked quite well and did not cause any more damage. I cut the split ring, releasing the hook from the lure. When you are pulling, just remember to keep the direction of the pull straight back, and away, from the hook, and keep pressure down on the eye on the hook. Hook will back right out of the wound channel and the barb will release. Paracord would work good for this too.

Ya, my wife couldn't watch, she almost passed out. This was a brand new hook and sharper than S**t, but it still was a bugger to get it to puncture my skin again. But then again, I'm not a hook sharpness connoisseur and don't ever sharpen my hooks until I start missing fish. Maybe he just got smart and realized the first time it happened that it would be much less painful if his hooks were razor sharp, lol.

Hey "free minute" just works, even though it can be longer than a minute sometimes.

I guess if I ever have to deal with anything like this again, I might try the string method, but man I just think that that way would be ugly, but I hear it works...

when i was young i used to play up in the attic when my parents weren't looking, and one time i found some rusty old fishhooks. of course i managed to get one stuck in my finger deep enough for the first barb to grab. they were small barbs though, and i didn't want to have to go find help and maybe get in trouble, so i just yanked it out. it wasn't too bad.

if it happened with a hook like that though, i would say i would try to work it out. if that wasn't working, i would just wrap it and leave it and wait for the professionals to take care of it.

The snatch method does work (albeit it wouldn't in your case as you had alread cut the hook at the shank). We trained on it in wilderness first aid. To proove the point without poking ahook in peoples skin, we stuck the hook through some fabric.

First we embedded the hook past the barb in the fabric. The instructor then told us to try and back the hook out of the fabric with just our fingers. This was as you can imagine it a nightmare, and the barb ended up taring a giant hole through the fabric. Then we were told to do the same thing but use the snatch method. The hook popped out without nearly the same damage as slowly working it out. Try it!

I'll bet it looked something like this.

No thats not my hand. Every so often a new picture like this surfaces on the internet. Man, as a fellow angler I know how easy this can happen. Espesially if you keep you hooks scary sharp. Hasant happend to me yet, but if it does, I think I would have the cutters out so fast it would be like a reflex action. use that adrenaline, stop staring at it and pull that bitch back through now before you pass out. :D

Holy Molly!

Well, when I did mine, the point was still under my skin, so I had to push it through to get it to look like that guy. That guys got it easy, alls he has to do is cut it and pull it out.

I've been fishing for 23 years, and this is the first time I've ever hooked myself past the barb.

Well, I didn't have cutters in my bag, but I did whip out my my leatherman almost before I realized what happened. Unfortunately the cutters are too far back to be helpful in my situation. Now, I will always have some good dikes in my tackle bag.

Since everyone swears by it, if it ever happens again, I'll try the snatch method. But the thread through method was really the only method I was familiar with.

Nice trout!!!
Is that San Pablo Reservoir??
I remember when I was a kid reading in The Chronicle fishing report that the "secret" to San Pablo Reservoir was to spray the lures with WD-40!!

Can't say I have ever gotten a hook in my hand...............

Fishing the salt with a fly rod and mostly catch and release, I pinch or file the barbs on all the hooks that I use when tying flies. I have hooked myself a couple of times:mad:, usually in the upper arm, got my ear once and the back of my casting hand. Barbless hooks come out about as easily as they go in and I’m back to fishing:D. I’ve gotten into the habit of pinching or filing the barbs when casting lures as well. I also like to switch treble hooks for singles. Whether I keep em or release em it is easier to unhook the fish and get back to fishn’.

I agree with those that say that speed is essential. The thread that was posted recently that describes a fall that caused damage to the ankle and the reaction to it really relates the best way to deal with emergencies. Quickly.

Tight Lines and best of luck.

ugh.
I always remember a supposedly true story my aunt told me when i was a kid. When she was young she was walking on the shore and saw two people fishing. Well one person was fishing and the other person was a few feet down the beach. Anyway the gut with the rod swung back to to cast out his line the hook hooks into the guys eye. Fisherman unaware of situation continues cast forward. Yoink! Suddenly theres more than a bobber and at hook out there floating in the water.
That little story really stuck in my head and still makes me queasy and cringe at the same time. I HOPE its a made up urban/rural legend.
Either way anytime i'm fishing or around anyone fishing i'm always very aware of where the sharp hooky end is.
Kinda like when you're shooting with a friend and you keep track of the other guys muzzle direction.
lol.

OMG, some of you guys have quite the stories. I'm just thankfull this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me.

Oh, yeah, I will definitely have cutters in my bag now!

No, this was at Chabot. This is only my third time fishing there, but so far, that seems to be the average size of the fish there. The last two times I was there, I watched a guy catch a 6.5 pounder, and a 6 pounder!!! The fish there are nice, but it just costs so much to fish in bay area lakes.

A few years back I was flounder fishing in March. My friend got a bite, then I got a hit from a schoolie bass. All of this on an 11' tin boat. The schoolie wrapped around my friend's line and the cum bucket rope. Big mess. Had to pull the chum bucket up. I'm bust working on unknotting the lines and trying to make sure I don't lose my friend's flounder. It was pretty cold out and the water was REALLY cold. hands were pretty numb. I feel a heavy weight on my index finger and notice that the bucket (full of mussels) is dangling from the hook (including barb) that is embedded straight into the pad of my index finger. I finish unravelling everything.

This is where the numbness comes in handy. I'm a bit of a control freak when I'm hurt - I inisist on seeing what doctors are doing to me, etc. so I won't let my friend help me. I pull out my trusty rapala fillet knife and cut a small channel in my finger to get the barb out, rinse my hand in the saltwater, put a wool glove on (it's sort of like gauze) and continue fishing (hey, I don't get much time to fish anymore - every second is important).

My Da had a small Striper drive a hook on the front treble set under his thumnail while it was still fighting on the rear set of hooks. Fun times... Dr. had to dig that one out after cutting through the nail.

Been hooked a few times but luckliy nothing a pair of pliers and a deep breath didn't fix.

Misanthropist,

I call it the Magic Minute- works the same :)

2Door

I have been hooked bad a couple of time. Both as a small kid, probably within the same year. I was probably about 8-9. Anyway, I was sneaking up on my brother and swimming underwater at the lake. He was fishing. When I surfaced he was casting and caught me by the bridge of my nose. My dad pushed the hook through right after he explained John Wayne doesn't cry when the Indians shoot him with arrows. I still teared up.:o

The next one involved my foot and the box of hooks the same brother dropped in the hallway of our house. He missed one that found its way to the meaty inner edge of my foots bridge. This time my dad was going to have to push it through even more tissue. It was a big hook so at least there was plenty for the pliers to hold to. I am glad I watched lots of John Wayne movies with my dad.:)
