Went for a walk yesterday....

If the SHTF in this country there will be very few people living in the woods as wilderness survivalists. As romantic as that may seem it's just not feasible for long-term survival. Wilderness survival, to me, means being able to live while you are escaping to some place else, living in the woods if you are lost (until rescued), or making do in the wilds should you become injured and no one to help. On the other hand, long-term survival may mean putting roots down which may include a self-sufficient lifestyle of growing your own groceries, killing your own animals that you raise (cow, chickens, pigs, goats, etc), preserving your own food, living without too many luxuries such as running water, electricity, etc. While it's nice to be skilled in bushcraft, that's not going to be what supports you and your family in a serious downturn in this country.

I think your misinterpriting my usage of s.h.t.f for a refrence to complete economic structual failure within this country. All i was meaning was
"shit hits the fan" example of such would be, driving in the backwoods of idaho my car dies.... surviving a remote plane crash.....and so on... getting lost while hunting.

Quick question... if for the contest you only take a knife and what fits into an altoids tin, then how are you supposed to boil your water?

In the Altoids tin? Would take a while but it's not out of the question to boil a bit and save it to a container.

I was able to find an old tin can, that is how i boiled all my meals.
yes Jeff i had to cut through metal....:o:D:D

I have a creek that looks similar near me. Me and the boys have caught and grilled fish in a makeshift campsite (the grill plate was found near an old homestead and rocks hold it in place.) We made pine needle tea using a discarded aluminum can. (I chickened out and used water from my camel bak though).

You could do some heavy duty aluminum foil folded up in the tin for boiling if you are worried about it.

Or you dig a small hole, line it with aluminium foil, put the water in it, put hot stones in it.

______________
RAT Pack #28

pack foil inside tin, fold into a cup/bowl and boil away :D

From my experience i have found that tin foil is so fenicky, it rips and takes up space. i took two quart baggys, you can suffice with one. cloro tabs do a body good. As jeff stated earlier, boil in you altoids tin if you must boil. that was my plan, its not optimal but it will work.

I never really had issues with foil,I see my problem...I meant to state Heavy Duty foil. not plain 'ole foil.

Is it better? i have never used the stuff...it would be cool to have though, i didnt think about it at the time but man, if i would have had some tin foil i could have baged that fish with some wild edibals and some mint leaves.....ahhhh shi!t that would have been good.
but, thats not need speaking just comfort points.:D

Never tried the Altoid tin thing, since if I'm in the woods I've got my Maxpedition Versapak (always in my vehicle). It's got the aluminum canteen cup and small water filter (1"x7"), not to mention the RC-4 and other gear in it.

Sounds like the start of a very well put together vehicle kit.:D

I figured if I had a canteen or maybe a steel water bottle I could pull this off easier. But we are only allowed a altoid's can!
