Went huntig last night

Fatwood is certainly a southern term.
First time I ever heard it was back in the 60's when visiting my cousins in western So. Carolina, near the Georgia border.
I thought they were saying "Fayettewood" due to their thick southern accents. :D

I was quite surprised, many years later, to see "FatWood" being sold in mail order catalogs. Only had ever heard the term in the South.

Found this:
Fatwood and Fatlighter are slang expressions which have been used in the South for many, many years to describe the amount of pitch (resin) in the pine wood. Fatwood/Fatlighter is the wood that is cut from the base of the pine tree, which has captured the resin from the trunk of the tree. Stumps that are left in the forest are cut by hand with a saw and ax to produce Fatwood.

Thanks Chris! Glad to see it stopped raining (for a minute) so you could get outside. Our ground is soaked here.
Now it looks like we are actually going to have winter for the next week to 10 days.

I brungd logs to mah bakdoor en case we gotta heet ar place with wud.
Itz gonna be a mite code ot thar. Weel tossin some uh dat thar fayettewood to git de far goin. ;)

Codg,

FWIW, I work for an engineering company and do ALL the cut & fill calcs for the whole office and while we're just a pipeline company ain't unfamilar with the patents drawings for permits/application agencies/etc.

Just amazes me I guess how much our cell phone infected, high tech vididiot, goals 2000 educated subjects of the world don't know, or even want to know.

Thank god my folks taught me to use my head for something besides a hat rack.

Guess I'll just go back to reading, and hanging out in the gift shop, as I certainly wouldn't want to be responsible for damaging anyone's fatuous sensibilities.

I hate to bust your bubble but I don't think you could hurt my sensiblities with a estwing framing hammer.

You talk about dumb, and your the one that thinks everyone knows the same thing you know.:barf:

Please go back to reading, or not reading or what ever it is that makes you happy, as long as you stop calling people dumb that do not have the same life experiences or parenting that you do. Chris

Rich lighter pine has been around since the time of methuselah, who was born around 3317 BC; can't believe it warrants being "hunted" or called "fatwood" for that matter (which is bound be some sort of yankee terminology).

Take it some folks are just dumber'na fence post and don't get out to the woods much.

Bigfoot's been around a lot longer then that and I'm still hunting him.

Anyway, theres lots of types of trees and vegetation in the woods and I am sure you don't know all of them, why do you expect us to?

I think that pretty well sums him up.

Amen Doc, Amen.

I just wish I'd had more time to get to know him. :barf:
He seemed like such an interesting fella :barf:

Real smart too, he told me so himself.
I know, I need to shut up and get back to the bow & drill. ;)

Is it possible to rant about "high tech vidiots" on an INTERNET FORUM without exploding from a self imposed internal conflict. Kind of like matter and antimatter coming in contact with each other.

I've hunted all my life and had never heard the term fatwood before in my life until about a week ago. I'm even from the south, well Texas so southwest. It is my understanding that fatwood comes from the aged stump of a pine tree (?). If that is so, then it would not surprise me that many people brought up as outdoors people would not know what it is. You see, pine trees don't grow everywhere. While they are abundant in east Texas for example, they are practically nonexistent in the rest of the state. Growing up in central Texas, where pine trees are an oddity, it is not surprising to me that I had never heard of fatwood. I'm glad that there is someone out there that will take the time and effort to share their knowledge and experience so that all may benefit. I thought that was the purpose of this forum, not to stroke ones ego by belittling others with questions.

Mr_Wilson, while you may be the world's leading authority on fatwood, cut and fill calculations, and and patent applications, Codger's point is still valid. Everyones' life experience and training is different, and not everyone excels at the same thing or has the same level of knowledge. I, for example, would not expect you to be able to converse intelligently on enzyme kinetics or the toxicity of nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors, but I don't hold THAT against you. It pains me that someone from my home state, the friendly state, would have such a "Hat Rack Head" moment.

hlee, I hope you took note of the fact that I refrained from making disparaging remarks about Tejas and Tejanos. I have some very dear and respected friends there, and a brother who is a pilot trainer/certifier for an airline in Houston. I likewise refrain, or at least restrain, my temptation to engage in the Southern national sport of humor involving those people involved in the late War Of Northern Aggression. I also have friends and relatives up there. We all know that people of poor manners are pretty equally spread around the map, and the globe.

Well I finally went back and took some pics, better late than never I guess. Whenever yall are out in the woods and see a stump that looks like the one in the pic kick it or hit it with a stick, if it is solid as a rock it may be lighter wood, break off a piece and if it is heavy, dense and very fragrant, BINGO. This is one of the richest I have ever found and burns like crazy, I wish they could put smell on the computer because it smells great too. One word of warning it is damn hard and will burn a chainsaw up, I guess a maul and a wedge might be the best but this wood is tough and hard to cut. Chris

Back to our regular scheduled program.
WOW, you couldn't use up all that in a life time! Nice score

How you gonna burn all that in the gas fireplace?:D :D

Gas????

Dang, Wilson must have been right about us poor dumb vidiots, so that's why it gets so smokey in the house when I build a fire. :D Chris

wow, :jerkit:

I don't much care if anyone thinks I'm dumb or not, I learned a whole lot from this thread. Funny stuff too... :D

it is sorta ironic to me how two posts can have such a different impact.

wilson (from now on he will be "meathead" to me) brings a frown with his convulted comments.

while flix makes me laugh out loud with his.

i guess that is why i hang around here... oh, and i learn some things too. what a country!

"oh god, please let me be the person my dog thinks i am"

...who was born around 3317 BC;

So smart, doin' 'em calculations 'n' such, but couldn't narrow it down any further. I am disappointed, I'd expected month, day, and hour from somebody so learned . Actually, I am pretty sure that fatwood is far older than that since species of coniferous trees significantly predate methuselah, the oldest living one being about 4717.325724 years old (I admit, I made up the last 8 digits myself :D). Clearly, you are someone who has spend a great deal outdoors, but who has never actually made it out of his own little part of the world.

Nice pics runningboar. I wouldn't mind stumbling over a cash that rich....not likely though, considering that I live in suburbia :(. Nicely said Codger.

All Right I admit it I am an ignorant Jersey boy who never heard of fatwood until he saw it in a mail order catalog. :D

Thanks for the picks and advise I will try to harvest some from the many Pine forest near me.:)

Perhaps MR wilson is just grumpy because Dennis the Menace kept him up all night

PS: Walmars sells Fatwood That really is just pine scraps and won't burn any better than any other scrap lumber. :thumbdn:

stumps are probobly the best source but on most of the older pines around here have dead lower limbs that are red orange when cut at the joint. The [fat wood]only goes a little ways up the limb but plenty good enough for starting a fire.
