Went Shooting

I love to shoot and absolutely love the thought of shooting long range. I went to the range today (which meant I walked out my backdoor. ;) ) I have been shooting 300 yrd for the past few years and have become pretty efficient at that range. I am not as accurate as I would like to be but I am consistent at around 3/4 MOA. So I decided today would be the day that I would test myself with a farther shot. I took off across the field in my backyard with a 7 inch disk and 18 x 15 inch steel plate. I set them up at 500 yards and walked back to the house. I grabbed my 6.5 Grendal and laid down in the yard. I got my calculator and pad of paper out and made a few quick calculations. Made a few adjustments to the scope and then settled in. I took about a min. to relax my muscles and steady my breath. Then I pulled the trigger and waited. Never in my life would I have expected to hear the sound of a bullet hitting steel on my first shot. I decided I would take another shot just to see if it was a fluke. I heard the second hit. Looked through my spotting scope and realized that I was only about 6 inches low and 2 inches right of dead center on one of my bullets. The other was 2 inches lower and an inch farther to the right. So I made some adjustments to the scope and settled back down behind the scope. Here is the result of a four shot group.

I am pretty happy with the results. Can't wait to get back out there and improve.

Its awesome that you have the ability to do this at home. I'm a city slicker so am envious of all you fellas on property.

Nice shooting :)

Nice going Josh ... have you changed your system since you posted back in May when you got your Bushmaster ?

Your wind reading is obviously coming along great to dial in for a first shot hit at 500 yrds:thumbup:

I remember you saying that the scope reticle was a bit thick for fine shooting ... but clearly you are getting the hang of things ... so just wondered if you had changed anything?

Nice shootin!

I love long range shooting... busted a doe at 488yds last year. Lots of fun.

Peter, the setup is the same. I am working on building a better lower with a better stock and trigger. I am still trying to save up for some better glass. I have been doing a lot of studying on how to adjust for windage and elevation. Seems to be paying off. I have a note book full of information that I just can't stop reading. Thanks for all your help.

The upper is a custom made upper. I have no clue who made the barrel. All I know is that it is supposed to be one of the best out there. I told the guy that made it to go for the best. I am very pleased with the work that he did.
Here is my setup.

That's a fine looking group and Rifle you've got there. I've always been fond of the 6.5/26 caliber cartridges, and find them to be for the most part good all around cartridges that are quite efficient. What kind of optics are you running on your AR ?

Right now it is a Center Point. (cheap wall-mart scope, had to have something for hunting season.) It is not the greatest for precision shooting but has decent glass. Still researching scopes at the moment.

take a look at trijicon accu points 3-9x40 scope or if you really want top end swarovski scopes are pretty amazing.

I'm a F-classer and long ranger. You ever want to just talk long range PM me. Nice plinker by the way, and no matter what anyone says first round hits at 500 yards are not easy. Some can make it look easy but it only comes from the hundreds or thousands of round put out there and the data collection becoming second nature. Good work.

ETA- If you want to change your stock and add some versatility to your rig look at the Magpul STR slider. It puts me just right behind a short dot. What scope is that?
