Hi guy's went into the city today to meet some of the forum members and my main goal was to find a piece of stag to send to Bagwell. He is making me a Carbon Helle's Belle and I wanted to find the right piece. I saw Jose and Phil and Ebbtide there and of course Les and Bob. Talked to many makers Dean ,Fuegen , Bob Dozier and Bud Neally to name a few. Spoke to many and looked around at what was there. The show got pretty crowded and most seemed to be having a good show. On Mr. Kessler's suggestion I looked at the young Italian Mr Esposito's work and was quite impressed with the only knife he had left a sublime little folder more art than knife and even thought I have horrible taste in knives and these kinda knives are not my bag only a fool could not recognize the grace and beauty of this knife kinda Loerchner like in look and finish. At 6 grand it should be. It was sold by the way. I finally had the chance to spend time with Mr. Gill and the pleasure was all mine. Peter helped me find the stag I was looking for and althought they had alot of stag in the 4 to 4 1/2 inch range not much in the 6 inch range and that is what Bill asked for to start with on an HB. Peter was a great help and my thanks goes out to him. He was such a help I ended up with three pieces. Now remember that for me it's all about the feel so we choose first on hand fit then on looks. All of these piece's are 6 inches or more and feel good in the hand. Bill said the handle will probale end up at around 5 1/2 so we have room to work with all of these. I pretty much have made up my mind but I would like to hear from you guy's which one you like. I know there are better looking stag piece's out there but I choose on feel first and any of these would work. Thanks to all the guy's I saw today and it was nice to meet you in person and have lunch Peter thanks again. Here is the stag which one do you guy's think

By the way the plan was not to buy any knives but as usual that plan did not work and I ended up buying the ugliest knife in the show. A guy had six Shiva Ki's and this Large Spirit Bowie caught my eye and it really caught my hand . For an eleven inch blade it is amazeingly light and fast in the hand, I like badly finished knives that feel good:D and this one might be one of the fastest big knives I have handled and it went home with me. When I got home I cut some cardboard wrapping tubes and I know this is not a sufficent test of cutting performance but lot's of fun and tells ya something of how a knife feels in motion. Only bad part about the show was that Steven was going to try and make it but could not and I wish he could have came. That and of course I spent more money on ugly Knives:D

Here is the Ki the pics do not show off the grain and temper line in the steel that well. The steel has some nice grain and a very prominent Hamon

That stag is horrible. I'm offering my stag disposal services free of charge! :p

Can't wait to see whichever piece winds up on a HB.

Lovely Ki

Nice knife. The top piece of stag is the type that I try to get.

Hey, JP, I sincerely hope the stag cost more than the knife, At least it should have. How do you keep coming up with these knives that are made up of spare parts of three or more?? Amazing.

On a serious note, I kind of like the top piece of stag the best. The bottom piece looks better, but the top piece appears to be the most comforatable.

As STeven would say.....Best Regards

Paul

The "popcorn" on the bottom piece is nicer, but it I was using that one, I wouldhave to decide whihc end to cut off and there wouldn't be enough left for a handle the length that Joe wants. You can lighten up the popcorn on that top one with a little elbow grease and some finer grit sandpaper. The stag on the two bowies that I did recently was slightly white in spots once I got done cleaning it up. i just finally figured out what color dye to use so that the handles didn't end up being so dark.

Use the one that feels right Joe :D

It was good to see you and the rest of the guys today (& yesterday).

Good crowds both days & lots of fantastic knives.

Joe, glad you had a good show. I'm hitting myself for not going back today but I did spend my whole day their yesterday. I also breifly chatted with Peter Gill and also met Danbo. Good to put another face to a name.

In my opinion, the show was slow as hell on Friday. Saturday must have been better. It might just be me but knives on the secondary market don't seem to be leaving the dealers tables too fast. I noticed some VERY low prices.

Thanks Jonathon wish we could have met. I forgot to mention Danbo he is a whirlwind but I did get a chance to visit with him briefly and enjoyed it.

Hey Paul keep laughing you will be getting this one and the HB and I am going to be a pain in the ass

Ebbtide it is always a pleasure wish I could have had more time with You and Jose and Phil

Hi Joe i am leaning toward the first one on looks but all have a certain feel. Both right hand but each has a different in a good way feeling

Seriously I know with out handleing it is hard but I would like to hear what you guys have to say so come on with replies on the stag and knife. Bad or good it's all good

1. I would definitely send this one to Master Ki;) and get an OFFICIAL MASTER pronouncement on Samurai Steel or not.

2. Send both top pieces of stag to Bagwell and let him pick from the 2....if he keeps both, you know that you picked really good stag, and that he is a total dick for nipping your stash.:D

3. Sorry I couldn't be there, I had to go to the hardware store here in SoCal instead, and enjoy a lovely dinner of lamp skewers with taziki sauce and pita from an excellent local bistro.:)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I like the looks of the top piece and it appears as though it would provide a great grip angle.

Couldn't make this show due to a business trip. Stinks because it's only an hour drive from my front door. :(

I'm liking the top stag as well, and I'm liking the looks of that Ki recurve ,too. Sounds like you had a good show.

I was told it was Samurai steel by the vendor but I do not think it is. One of the pieces I have I believe is Samurai steel and the other is definately not. This one looks in between has more grain structure then one and less than the other. For those of you that do not know what we are talking about Shiva gets one price for mono steel and another much higher for what he calls Samurai steel. Either way I bought it thinking and believeing it is not his samurai steel

Looks like it is getting to be a unanimous decision. The top piece of stag is the way to go. Although I did watch you cut the end of the stag in the middle with a hack saw and it took you a while to get through it. You have a little time to think about it. Go with what feels best. It was a great show and enjoyed meeting and hanging out with everyone!

Thanks for sharing your fantastic day, Joe! Sounds like you had some fun!
The top piece of stag is my pick...of course, they ALL will look great when it's all said & done...
Can't wait to see what Paul adds to your endeavor!

Whichever stag you use it will be a winner, Joe.
If it were mine I'd use either the top or bottom piece.

The Shiva Ki blade looks like 1095 but I'm not sure as some of his etches don't show the grain structure that well.
I really like this large Spirit blade.
Sounds like you had a good time and thanks for sharing.

Peter is a professional stag shopper - you got some great pieces. Top two are my favs. Looking forward to seeing the HB.

Yep, the top piece would definitely be my choice if it feels good in your hand.

The Ki is no doubt a chopper.
You will certainly enjoy it. I like the looks of it as well.
