Anybody else got an old one?
I recently posted about finding an Imperia I wanted, the old M7S 'survival knive'. I found it on ebay, had belonged to a SWAT cop. That led to the purchase of a new and never used Schrade version, the BT01. What a brute of a knife! If you recall, LT had some thoughts and insights on that one.
Well, as usual, one knife leads to another. I saw another IMperial M7 going dirt cheap on Ebay, very well used, so I bought it. Yep. It had seen hard use. Tip was blunt, only a quarter inch gone, had been sharpened often and badly, the blackened finish mostly rubbed off. My new user! I made it my project for this past weekend.
I took it apart, first. To get the pommel off, which is affixed just like an old Imperial m7 bayonet, I had to grind down thru where the pommel was press-fitted into the tang. Very good. The hilt guard of these knives are shaped into screwdrivers, phillips and straight. I didn't need those, so very careful work with the dremel tool nicely reshaped each. Perfect fit for my thumb when using. I spent much time sharpening the blade, using a file at the tip to reshape that. I didn't wanna use the grinder, afraid that getting it too hot may disturb the temper. I put a good edge on it, as I like, shaving sharp from tip down to an inch and a half, less extreme to the guard/hilt.
The nail puller/ hammer pommel on the stock version is sticking up, so that when the knive is used to cut (this blade is sharp on one side, sawback on the other) the nail puller poked my palm. That was why I removed it. I note the newer Schrade version has the nail puller flipped as well, so I wasn't the only one that didn't care for it. I reinstalled it so flipped, then used "JB Weld" expoxy to attach it and fill in the depression on the top of the pommel. And I used JB to fill in the gaps (again, just like the original M7 bayonet this was designed from) at hilt and blade/tang. Gave it a nice, finished look.
I gave the knive a paint job, using Rustoleum primer, then their brand of 'camo' paint. It will probably wear off in use, which is not really an issue. Just looks good. Not worth having it sent our for parkerizing.
I replaced the screws and nuts of standard bayonet type checkerd plastic two-piece handle with new stainless steel ones (it had been missing one set), which I also painted black.
The great old sheath is really nice, but the inner plastic blade protector was badly cracked several places. I used super glue, then covered the whole thing with a thin layer of JB Weld. I removed the little metal clip that goes onto the inner plastic sheath, as the sheath does hold the knife secure without it.
And Voila! I have my new / old user. I'll have to take and post some piics. Here is just a real quick scan of the standard stock M7S and my modified one.
