We're undergoing a brute force attack, extra security implemented

It was particularly bad tonight with the site offline for several hours. Kind of sluggish even now.

Actually this is not amusing, these chronic attacks cost us in time, money and personel.
These attackers must be permanently stopped!
Thank you bladeforums team

I have the BF's website on my browser window. If I right click it and open it in a new tab the site pops right up. Hope this helps and block them bastids. keepem sharp

Well some will approach the site owner and offer to shut the attack down for a payment.

Others will use it as a method of compromising site security for a second attack (hoping the site turns off some security measures to mitigate the current attack).

Given the typical user on this site it's most likely trolls "doing it for the the lulz".

Ah. Looks like they ramped up the efforts. Couldn't get on last night.

If its happening at night, it could also be from another country/ time zone. i.e. China datamining the forum to rip off technical information and designs, stripping it of western influence and republishing it in Chinese. If you haven't been following the news, they are trying to supplant world power.

You didn't think all those fake Chinese knives were the work of one man did you?

If what is happening is a distributed denial of service attack, it is going to be extremely difficult to stop it never mind determine who is in fact responsible for it. Often, an attacker(s) is overseas, which significantly complicates the discovery of their identity and the possibility of ever bringing them to justice. Unfortunately, this sort of thing is the potential cost of doing business on the Internet these days. I am sure that Spark is doing everything within his power to combat it.

Kevin John vs Kevin Jon.

Catchy.

I'm not very tech savvy. Do these attackers actually gain something from this or are they just being pricks for the sake of it?

More than likely someone was banned or warned and wanted to exact some lulz in revenge with the ol' LOIC cannon. If they had a good sized botnet BF would have been screwed.

True about the botnet. Someone may be using the site for practice. My Alma Mater was the target of a DDoS from China around 2001. It looked like it was used for practice. A major player would have brought this place right down. Even a low level event like this requires a level of sophistication that I haven't seen here.

Dam!!! Hope you guys got to the bottom of that mess!!
First time I was able to get on since late last night.
Great to see the site back up!!
Joe

And the main reason they're able to run those botnets with hundreds or thousands or even tens of thousands of bots?

It's courtesy of people who do not have the latest anti-virus/firewall on their home computers. Each one of those bots is hosted by a compromised computer and the owner of the computer is usually not even aware that their device/bandwidth is being used to conduct a Distributed Denial of Service attack.

I thought my work was blocking weapon forums on my IPAD. Phwew! Nope.

Crazy. I knew there had to be some explanation for all the downtime. Pretty nuts though. Wouldn't expect this sort of thing to happen to our community here. Hopefully it gets cleared up soon.

It has been nearly 24 hours since I have been able to access the site. I've been trying all day.

Nailed it. I do some bug hunts on the side. It's amazing to see how poorly protected some private and corporate computers are.

Another forum where I'm a Mod, got attacked pretty hard by something similar and we had to implement similar security features.
It's sad but there are pretty ugly people out there unfortunately.
