Were you guys alowd to have knives as kids?

Had my first knife at age 9. I had stolen a cheap ass pair of scissors from school, broken off one of the blades and made a handle for it out of a chunk of wood. When my parents discovered and confiscated it, they bought me my first real knife and taught me how to use it and what not to do with it. Can't help myself since then.

since i was 6 or 7, started out with freebee knives and worked my way up

now use a benchmade. stops along the way include, Vic, buck, kershaw, gerber, back to kershaw, crkt, benchmade. I can honestly say the one that i learned the most from was the freebee.
i'm with moose on the idea that kids should enjoy the outdoors, guns. etc...

and OP, i had friends who had parents the same way, they didnt get a knife till like 10 or 11 vs my 6 or 7

I've been around guns, knives, sharp sticks, and boom sticks as long as I can remember. Got started by taking any of my dad's knives he had out (mostly filet knives) and I'd take them into the woods and cut sticker bushes and tiny branches with it. Then I got my BB gun when I was 6 I think, a Ruger 10/22 when I was 9, got a kid's bow and arrow set when I was 7 (?). Been going strong since then.

I've been chopping and shooting stuff since I was probably 5. And I've managed to cut myself, and hit myself with BBs a lot in that time too. But, kids are supposed to get hurt, scares build character :D

Yep. Always carried a sak or a slip joint, and my old mans boy scout fixed blade knife he gave to me when I turned 8 or 9. When I was in school in the 80s we all carried knives...teachers, students and used them on normal cutting chores....not knife fights. never saw one, except on tv. We also at age 12 or so were shooting .22lr rifles in the swamps and woods by ourselves.

Today due to the suburb invasion, they'd call the swat team in at my old schools if a kid had a sak.

So I was wondering did your
parents let you have knives as kids or did you start your collection when you got older.

Yes, I had a knife as a kid. Most men and most boys carried knives when and where I grew up. But, that was some 50 years ago and the times were different. We didn't collect them. They were just common tools to be carried and used. As tools.

My dad gave me my first swiss army knife when I was about 7. I decided to cut a tree with it with the blade oriented in the wrong direction. It closed and split my thumb open. I've been a fan of locking blades ever since!

But yeah, I had pocket knives, sling shots, etc. Dad bought me a Sig 229 when I was 17.

I have been carrying a knife on and off since I was 12. I just recently got interested in them again due to a pretty bad stabbing that occurred in my hood. When I found this forum I had no knives, now I have two meyerco maxx q's and a ZT 0350. Next stop is definately a strider SnG.

My dad gave me my first pocket knife for my 8 year birthday. Been hooked ever since.

When the nun teaching school wanted to cut something she'd ask who had a knife. She never got back to me, she'd take her pick of the ones in the front row. She did make a disparaging remark to one guy though, I wasn't sure if his knife was too hoodlum or too dinky for her taste. Never found out as it didn't even pique my curiosity back then.

I've been carrying a pocket knife since I got my Totin' Chip as a Cub Scout. :)

my bradley kimura 7 witch is just a flashy weapon has no tool purpose at all.
I have to disagree with this statement. A balisong makes an EXCELLENT tool, and is actually not a very efficient weapon compared to most other types of folding knives. It's got the strongest and safest locking mechanism, since the blade can't possibly close on one's hand during normal use unless a component of the knife actually breaks. I carry and use my balisongs as tools all the time, and I suggest you begin to look at yours differently. You'll soon discover that it's a great utility knife!

My father gave me a SAK and a Scout's knife when I was 7 but he never let me touch his guns. That's probably why I took 'em and fired e'em secretly whenever I had the chance. :p

Like a lot of us, I started with a Scout SAK. (Cub Scouts) Never forget my Dad taking me to get it. (Even 40 + years ago now)

Started shooting competion at about 8 y/o (22's) Actually got my NRA Sharpshooter with bars (LOL) (never got Expert though)

Nothing wrong with learning to shoot and camp. JMHO.

Was with 9 or 10 when when I received my first 'jackknife' (as we called it in those days in PA).

haha, my sister did the same thing with a key chain SAK, kinda.......she tried cutting a cookie cake, put the blade upside down by accident and pressed down....ouch

My mom gave me my first knife when I was about 11, a key chain SAK...been carrying a SAK ever since.

Yup. My father gave me my first knife when he got tired of me borrowing his. Like others have said, most boys had a knife back then. Heck, we even had a school assignment to bring a knife to class so we could carve something from a bar of soap in the 5th grade.

Been carrying (and losing) pocket knives since I was 6 years old.

my father gave me what i believe was a buck 110, it matched his, when i was a small boy. Guns were around as far as i can remember. like someone mentioned earlier, I was taught to respect these tools before handling.

I honestly can't remember when, but I was young when I got my first knife. My dad and older brother were avid sportsmen and having a sharp tool just seemed to be a family tradition mixed with a practicality. Guns went a similar way, I fired my first round when I was about 6 or 7 (under STRICT supervision, I might add). I do remember receiving my first two "keeper" knives for christmas, a SAK classic, and an Old Timer. Good little knives, and I believe I could still find both somewhere in my house. I made my share of mistakes, the old timer's blade-tip was regrettably broken by the time I was ten, but I was not as wise then as I am now. With time, my tastes changed, and so did my collection; lately, I've been getting back into the outdoors (after a few years off around college) and therefore, the size of the knives I buy has increased to correspond with the bigger tasks I now require. But I still have that Old Timer :)

It was a "don't ask, don't tell" policy at my house. I was a wild child though. I'm doing things very different with my sons, teaching them rights and the responsibilities that go with them.
They own their knives 'legally' unlike me. :D
