WESN Allman on Kickstarter

Heavy James Brand vibes. More marketing than knife.
Agreed. It's a Huckberry/Gear Patrol lifestyle type knife. It's not marketed to knife guys. Knife guys know where to find the same size knife, from a reputable established manufacturer, for about a third of that preorder price.

I haven't seen any with the same minimalist aesthetic, would you be willing to name a couple for me to check out? I'm perfectly willing to spend less money on a better knife, I just hadn't found one that appealed to me in the same way.

Here's the knife:

There's no internal milling or skeletonization, so this sub 3" knife weighs nearly 4 ounces.

My favorite bit is where they talk about their confidence in their product and how it has a lifetime guarantee. How the hell can a 10 minute old brand who outsources their manufacturing possibly expect me to buy into the idea that they'll warranty it "for life". Particularly when their "confidence" in their brand leads them to requiring all funds be collected BEFORE manufacturing begins.

I have no problem with Kickstarter or products offered on it, but don't yammer on about guarantees and confidence if you're not willing to accept any risk as a maker.

Also they're "excited to announce!" a leather slip... Really? You're excited about 2 oval pieces of leather that have been partially stitched together and have no appreciable adornment or embellishment? I've got a whole line of WESN accessories to sell them then. How about a WESN river stone? Maybe a WESN basswood block or a bag of WESN unseasoned sunflower seeds. They could get into the world's most stable market even with a WESN pinewood casket. Hell make a LW option with the WESN burlap body bag. I can hardly contain myself.

I'm sure the knife is fine, but it's all marketing and no substance. A solution to a problem nobody had. Pass.

... and yet, somehow they've managed to get over 1200 'backers' to prepay for this... it's really rather indicative of the modern 'sensibilities' of knife purchasing - apparently, any design that isn't outright horrible will have thousands of backers :(

(the frown is simply because this will result in a plethora of similar 'products')

Not really sure how many of those backers are knife people, or just people prone to marketing. My guess is the latter.

I'm not into it, but I get that many will be.

Kinda like I don't get what people see in Medfords, but apparently plenty do.

The last Kickstarter knife project I thought might fly was the Koster Bushcraft Folder.

Egad, but was I mistaken. Glad I didn't partake.

Just got mine today. Came with the lanyard bead and I tied the olive Paracord knot on it.

The blade shape does not seem that practical to me. It looks like a sharpened cheese spreader or some type of kitchen utility tool.

I think as we get older...we get more cynical. I am definitely not digging that folder at all. Im glad the company came through for you. Many have taken the KS plunge only to be screwed.
Nowadays i look for interesting, intriguing, well constructed and thought out knives.
To each their own.
Keep ‘em Sharp

Edit to add: Im also a sucker for embellishments. ;)
