Hi, I'd like to take a trip to West Virginia in the next few days. Me and my friend are looking for some patches of wilderness to camp out at instead of an official park. Does anyone know some good areas where we wouldn't be tresspassing on farms or peoples property?

Spruce Knob Mountain.Hike in to Judy Springs Campground. About 3 miles. No real camp ground and no one around. Just a good trout stream and beautiful country. It is a State Park but you would never know it. Premitave camping and away from everything.
Been a few years since I've been there so you may have to do some internet research to find info.

DITTO!

I camp at a place called Revelles River Resort ( http://www.revelles.com )

Its just of 33 outside of Elkins, WV (in Bowden). Just up the road is the entrance to the Monongahela National Forest.

I've spent Labor Day or Memorial Day weekend there every tear for the past four. The fishing is in credible in the spring. Tons of wildlife (black bear, deer, wild turkey, snakes, etc...).

Just bring back lots of pics!

Yeah, anyplace near elkins. I always loved the shavers fork of the cheat river. Good fishing and you have to hike a little ways to actually hit state land but very scenic.

I dug up a couple pics for ya:

A train bridge you must cross to get to the Waterfall:

And the waterfall (about a 5 mile hike):

And from partially uner the falls:

I think Elkins is about 30 miles from spruce knob and about 60 from seneca rocks and smole cavern. All the trout fishing streams in the state are near this area. As mentioned before they do have bears in that part of the state as well as lots of other wildlife. There is a lot of humidity so bring a tent that breaths. Good luck, have fun and as always stay safe.

Great pics cs!
Are you from that area? I hope to be back there in May of 07. The pic in my post is of the Shavers Fork of the Cheat near the Bowden Hatchery.

I'll have to look you up for some fishing if you are in the area.

This little guy invited himself to our campsite.

Cool photos rup.
I am originally from Parkersburg WV however I am in the Air Force and spend very little time back in WV. When I go back to see family I always try to make it over to elkins to do a little trout fishing.

Is that falls the High Falls of Cheat? Is the trestle on the West Fork Trail?

If you want to car camp the Gandy Creek dispersed camping area near Spruce Knob is really nice.

If you want to backpack it is about a six mile round trip but the Forks of Red Creek in the Dolly Sods Wilderness is great. Here's some pics:

And there are people that can't understand why I want to move out of the Detroit area to the heart of West "By God" Virginia

I've been all over the country on business and pleasure and the mountains of WV are my favorite place to be.

cs, no cheese for the little Wood Rat. We were packing up on our last day there. I think he got wise to the sound of tents being taken down and figured out that some folks leave leftover food behind. :D , I had to disappoint the littel bugger. Don't want him spoiled.

Hey hollow D, That is the one they call the high falls. I park in bemis and walk to it from there. I usually flyfish the first mile of river then follow the tracks out to the falls. I dont know if its an actual trail or has a name. Supposedly you can take a trolly out to it. I have never seen the trolly run though. BTW... cool photos.
Wv really does have a lot to offer in that part of the state. Here is a photo of one of the locals(stocked), if you see one of these in the river they look like big goldfish swimming around. They are really neat to observe.:

cs,

I've seen those at the hatchery. I haven't caught any yet tho.

Landed a couple brookies (at least I think they were) in the 12" to 14" range. Unfortunately I didn't have the camera then.

This thread is giving me a home-sick feeling...

Sweet photo!
I have only seen one while in the wild and took me about an hour to catch him. He would just watch it float buy and sometimes chase it but after a while he just got tired of watching it float buy and finally took the fly. Boy was I happy.

Just wanted to poke in and say thanks for all the information and photos. Good discussion, as soon as we figure out how we'll get gas I'm sure it will really help us out. :)

Spruce Knob Sneca Creek Backcountry isnt a state park, but is National Forest. I would recommend the Seneca Creek Backcounrty around Spruce Knob. Judy Springs can fill up with the weedend warriors, but the beauty of Nat Forests is that basicly you can camp anywhere. Although the most people Ive seen at Judy Springs is about 5 people (although I would avoid camping there around labor Day).

Dolly Sods is also popular but you can go without seeing anyone is you chose your spots carefully. Also seldom known is Laurel Forks Wilderness area close by Spruce Knob. Its a nice place with places out of the way, and some good fishing spots.

BTW rupe- I noticed that pic is your avatar at the swamp. Cool:cool:
He vivi at least gas seams to be down about $0.40 a gal. That oughta help a bunch. Good luck raising the funds and be safe.

Doc

Doc, Have you ever tried it? I usually grab some and hand it to the younger kids (like my 10 yr-old nephew). Tell 'm its sweet and to chew it but don't eat it :D .

The look on their face is priceless.

I have always wanted to hike to High Falls.

Also wanted to hike on the Allegheny Trail near Gaudineer Knob where all the virgin timber is.

Planned to last month, but since I had never gone before and we had to come out of the woods early on Sunday to make the trip thru the Sinks of Gandy with a group we went to Seneca Creek again.

Here's some pics from the Sinks and a few more from Seneca Ck.
