Western, Westmark, and Camillus

I just read the thread regarding Western knives being purchased by Camillus in 1991. What differences, if any has that made to the Western knives? What exactly, if it is known, was the steel used previously. Is the steel currently used unique to Western? What steel is currently used?

Is there any intention of reviving the Westmark (higher-end Western) line? [I have not seen one around, but I am perhaps incorrectly assuming they are not being made.] Is there a way to tell the vintage of the Western knives and/or whether it is made by Camillus now or Western in the past?

My Westmark Model 702 is here, if you are interested. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=91257&a=817804&p=13610835

[If you hit index at the top, you can view pictures of other knives I have posted.]

Any information regarding the Westmark knives, their steel, etc. would be of interest to me.

In the instructions it states that the knife was "handcrafted individually" and the serial number was used to follow the process. The serial number on my Westmark is 25475. Can anyone explain exactly how the Westmark knives were made, or when that serial number would have been made. The knife was a gift NIB so I do not have as much information as I might otherwise have. Of course until recently I guess I would not have known what the information meant.

Does my Westmark Guarantee "at any time," still work as stated? Of course, not that I have any expectation of needing it.

I note that I did previously get some information out of the rec.knives newsgroup and saw another post in August about early Western knives being highly prized, their carbon vanadium steel being excellent for hard use and ease of sharpening, and the knives generally a good value for the money. If I find it and anyone expresses an interest I will post it if that is acceptable. Coincidentally, a few months ago I spoke at length to a deer hunter who had happily been using his Western knife for many years.

Hi Donald, Thanks for the reply on the Westmark Hunting Knife. Is that Model 702 for sale? If it is please email me the price, I am deffinitely interested. I have been searching all over the net for information about Westmark. Thanks again.

Donald,
Sorry to take so long getting back to you, but I've been trying to get some of your questions answered. Let me see if I can answer a few....

Steels, most early WESTERNbrand knives were carbon steel, 'Chrome Vanadium'[I'm told similar to the Chrome Vanadium used by CASE]. They later began to use some stainless in thier folders, and during the WESTERN/COLEMAN era, began to use some stainless in thier lower priced, kraton handled fixed blades. I beleive the stainless used then was 440A.

We use 440A currently in all western knives.

All the WESTERN knives produced since CAMILLUS purchased the company have a tang stamp that says WESTERN CUTLERY
Camillus, NY

We have no plans at the present to revive the WESTMARK line. But I will admit it could sound interesting.

I have no information about the serial # and its meaning, but I have people looking into it now. Unfortunately, there is not alot of info out there on the WESTMARK knives.

CAMILLUS/WESTERN will do everthing possible to take care of you should you have a problem with your WESTMARK, or any early WESTERN produced knives. But please understand, some of the early produced stuff, like the WESTMARK line, we probally don't have the tooling for, and would be limited in what we could do for the knife. I have a pledge from the President of the company that 'we will do everything we can' if the need arises.

We should have our new website up soon, and it will contain a section on WESTERN, including all the models we currently produce. I will make an announcement on this forum when it is up. I hope this was some help, and I promise to post more information if and when I get it. Thanks for your interest.

Will,

Thank you for your kind reply. It appears that since Camillus has such a long knifemaking history, that you are also paying attention to Western's long history. If you get anymore information, that would be gratifying, but in any event I appreciate your efforts to date.

Donald.

Non-Expert,

Welcome to the Forums.

One of thee days when you become an expert on collectible knives you will realize how little information there is on many knives. Outside of a few popular brands and periods, research usually comes down to combing old magazines and newspapers for notices and ads. The industry has been notorious for keeping very little in the way of records.

The lack of information doesn't imply very much. Many of the well hyped knives were just well hyped junk, while many excellent factory and custom made knives went by with little or no notice.

I was under the impression that the western bowie I just ordered was 440HC, (or maybe 420HC). Anyhoo, the material you stated contradicts what is on the website.
