I've got a long wait till my name comes up for a custom from Bret Dowell. I really want to have its scales made of Westinghouse micarta. I love the aged look of it. Anyone have a reliable source to buy some for myself and another member of 24hour? Thanks

I asked the same question from here in UK, I too have taken a great shine to this material - pun intended.

However, it is like rocking-horse poo........

From what I was able to learn, there's a few 'more senior' knifemakers in US that have some left, but apart from that.........

If someone was able to make some - $$$$$$$$$ ;)

A while back I recall one (or perhaps more) of the makers that frequent this forum mentioning a supply of it.

If I recall it was Lin Rhea or Karl Andersen. Perhaps this post will be seen and will get a response. It was a butterscotch color.

Thanks dude! I just got off the phone with him and bought some. .142"x 1-1/4"x4-1/2". I hope these will be sufficiently thick.

Pictures when you get it, or it didn't happen. Love the stuff myself.

Think that .142" will be thick enough for a fixed blade?

Pretty thin stuff. Would look right on an Ingram or Winston IMO. Most scale material I have sent off has been in the 3/8ths range. Probably look great on a folder at that thickness.

I am having Bret make me a two blade folder, one a larger lannys clip and the other a rounded tip followed by a recessed blade for gutting.

- just sent off and managed to secure some too, thanks for the heads-up

I'd guess trying to epoxy two layers together is a no-no..?

I have used some from Alabama Damascus and it is beautiful material. The thinner material can be nice on thicker steel; I also have some I backed with contrasting .060" G10 that makes it more versatile if you need a thicker handle.

Everything on Ebay is fake for one. Micarta made by Westinghouse is supposed to be in thin supply, so it's likely that many of the people hocking it on the bay are selling knock off phenolics they made in their basement... or a chinese factory. So this material that is supposed to be very rare, old and desirable just happens to be available in unlimited supplies on Ebay? Tell me more!

For reference, there is a breed of chicken called Ayam Cemani that is entirely black (black bones, black eyes, black organs, black everything) that go for $8000 for a trio. People on Ebay offer counterfits (you'll never know until you go to fry one!).

That would be thin even on a knife by Gene. I can't use a knife handle that thin.

I have a few knives from Dave Pitt (Bearpawcustoms) with it. He told me he still had some, whether he would sell you some I don't know
