did a quick stroll the the monsoon drenched woods today, short and sweet. walked about 3 Kms, the rain coming down hard and fast. The trial was under 1" or more of water in spots. Did'nt bring the camera with me , it was just too wet to expose it to that much water. :thumbdn:

Gathered a few late summer blueberries, and strung up a sheet of plastic (2'x2') to several branches, with a bit of a droop in the center. At the bottom i placed my cup and within 5 minutes it was full of clean water (well, virus/bacteria free...dont know about the sky chemicals). Drank several mug fulls and carried on.

Plinked a few pieces of old iron plate with small pebbles and the slingshot. Thock Thock Thock! :p

got about 2 kms down the trail when i heard a "huff" beside me. There was a black bear about 30 feet to my left, standing up and sniffing in my direction. I yelled loudly and it just stood there. So i loaded the flare launcher and shot off a bearbanger. SSSWWWWWWWFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTT BOOOOOOM! The bear ran off , crashing thru the thick underbrush. I fired a second round and it detonated about 2 feet behind the bears arse. SSSSSSSSSWWWWWWWWWWWFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTT! ! BOOOOOOOM! :D:p:D I have never seen a bear run so fast up a steep embankment, the smoke from the banger drifting off his fur.

warned a few shocked hikers (they thought i was hunting  ) about the bear and headed back to my hot coffee in the truck.

short and sweet, couple hours in the rain , now i got chores to do.

'splain, please.

My apologies if it has been posted before.

huh? I shot off a bearbanger from a flare launcher.

EDIT: we have a HUGE black bear population (thanks to the bleeding heart liberal eco nazis) here on the North Shore, they are fearless of humans and plague the woods and trails and urban areas. We kill (thankfully) a number of them every year. While on the trails and in the woods i and others carry bearbangers, they are explosives launched from a flaregun or pen type flare launcher, they travel about 60 feet and detonate with a massive boom, scaring off the bear.

ready for use, in Safety position:

aiming and prelaunch: (as i am indoors right now i used a spent round)

as i am indoors i am not launching one. Suffice to say they rival the boom you hear during the detonation of a aeril bomb at the fireworks show.

spent casing from todays walk, slightly smaller than a 12 gauge shell. This casing holds the projectile that shoots downrange and then detonates.

Kismet, (or should I say Ricky?) a bear banger is something designed to scare off bears with a loud noise, much like a gun shot. Remember, we're in Canada. :D

I'm liking that a lot.

Betcha not available in U.S., or need class 2376 license or something. I will investigate.

Thanks.

(Edit: Found some references, and this site. http://www.ursusinternational.org/en/bangers.html

No references to U.S. availability as yet, but I'll keep looking.

Thanks. New to me.)
