I picked up some sharpening supplies today.Couldn't find CHROMIUM OXIDE 5 MICRONS.Is 320 TO 800 GRIT ok for a convex edge AND ANYOTHER KIND OF SHARPENING.;) FRANK C....THANKS.

220-400 will remove metal fairly rapidly--good for initial sharpening/shaping of edge or repairing chips, dings, etc.

600-1000 will produce a good working edge.

1500-2500 produce very polished edges.

Try the different grades and see what works for you. The higher grits do tend to clog fairly quickly, but you can clean them with water and an old toothbrush to extend their useful lifespan. I've heard several people suggest using mineral oil on the finer grits to avoid clogging.

Josh,Even with the the 800 grit I can see a tremendous diff in the edge.I'm off to the store to get 1000 to 1500 grit.THANKS, FRANK C....;)

Glad to help:) I'm no expert by any means-- just trying to pass on what has worked for me through trial and uh, error   . Lee Valley tools has some really fine wet dry paper (can't remember the exact grit sizes), and some of it comes with an adhesive backing so you can affix it to various surfaces. I want to order some and stick it on a piece of dowling to make a round hone for the curved part of the khukuri behind the belly.

JUSTRIGHT,

OK, looks like somebody's hooked;)

Too bad about not being able to find the chromium oxide, though. I got mine at a speciality woodworking store--they had other honing compounds too. Home Depo and the like also have other honing/polishing compounds that will probably work similarly.

Even stropping with Flitz on gray (non-corrigated) cardboard will get you there, just not as quickly, and the longer time gives one more chances to screw-up.

Yea,I'm hooked.Always looking for the best way to sharpen knives.Learning all the time.Flitz is next and then Lee Vally.I'm ready to pick the double sided strop with CHROMIUM stick,$22 or so.Can't wait. ;) :D THANKS ,FRANK C....

that 1500grit paper.Man,does that feel like a strand of wire.:D Not hair poping sharp but great for chopping.THANKS ALL FOR THE HELP....;)
