SO how many of you guys forge with water on top of your anvils? I started doing this about a week ago and buddy does it work wonderful! Hardly no scale at all! Blades look alot better coming off the anvil, So I was just wondering if any of you guys do this or not, Thanks to all Charlie

I usually just do it on the final, finishing heats Charlie. That method seems to work for me really well.... helps blow scale off without so much mess as dealing with the water the whole time.

I do use water as well but not all the time. a few times i lay my blade on the anvil and give it a whack and it sounds like a gun shot as the water instantly vaporizes, its cool.

Place the hammer in a tub of water. Pull it out and run it across the anvil to let the excess run across the surface. Pull the billet/bar and strike it with the wet hammer. The
CRACK" of the first hit is really something. It blows off a lot of scale. I use this method for swords and W2 forging. The counter intuitive thing is that it makes the heat last longer.

Lately I have been running my forge rich enough that there is a layer of carbon fluff on the cooler areas when I pull it out so I haven't been getting a lot of scale.
