Not very often I wear a waterproof jacket, I can't stand them, but today I had to dig one of mine out as I knew the rain was in for the day !

It didn't seem to bother Maisy and Snicker though......

And these guys were everywhere, they loved the wet weather......

I noticed today that the Salmon berries are starting to appear, I can't wait for berry season !!!!
The young tender shoots of these were a part of the diet of many northwestern indian tribes. I've heard that they taste good chopped and sauteed in butter, think I'll stick to the berries for now !

I also came across these, I'm not too hot on Fungi and only know a few, these looked like Oyster mushrooms but maybe someone can tell me otherwise ?

With it being so wet I'd planned on seeing if a ranger band would burn long enough in the rain to ignite some fatwood. I used my JK to chop up some fatwood and then realised that the ranger band had vanished from my pocket......note to self, be more prepered next time !!!!!

Spent a little time watching a seal, not sure if you can see him in the distance, before setting off back !

It's always so lush and green in your pics though, and you need the rain for that! The hills around here are already turning brown, and it's 96 here today :grumpy:

What kind of jacket is that? Does it have pit zips or any other kind of core venting? You might want to look at the newer generation of waterproof shells because they are a lot nicer these days compared to what was out 10 or so years ago.

You alway's take some Great picture's PitDog, I like your Info. on edible Plant's, But I'm In Eastern Nebraska and the Flora & Fauna from Vancouver Island Is definately different, How old Is your Jack Russell ? Jack Russell's are a Real popular Hunting Terrier In my area "They Fear Nothing !" Thank's for sharing all the picture's from your Hike's/Outing's,

The one I'm wearing doesn't have venting but I do have the one in the link which is really good and about as breathable as any waterproof can be, it's just that when I plan on bushwacking and making fires I don't like to wear my nice stuff !

Thanks for the kind words buddy, I think Snicker is about 20 weeks now. She is so alert compared to my bull terrier and is already chasing birds and stuff, I can see why they are popular ratters and hunters of small game !

Haha, I'm the opposite. I wear my Arc'Teryx Beta LT when I'm out in the nastiness and want to make sure I'm dry. I feel dumb wearing it around town or any other situation that is not just completely nasty.

Nice pics lots of greenery showing. Love the seal shot for some reason. Maybe the coloring of the overall picture.

You've got the right idea buddy, I must be one of the only people on here that has ' Safe queen coats !!!!':o

Thanks for the pics, Pit. I love hiking in the rain, especially in your neck of the woods.

Has anyone tried eating salmon berry shoots? Are there similar plants (ie. berry bushes with comparably edible shoots) to be found in Ontario? I would love to have something else to throw on the skillet when I'm camping.

All the best,

- Mike

PS if your rain coat doesn't permanently smell like camp fire, cintronella candles, and / or fish guts, you're not trying hard enough! :D

Great pics as always, pitdog. As for me, I LIKE wet nasty weather. No skeeters, no crowds, everything smells nice and fresh, the rain sounds relaxing, the froggies and whatnot are jumping, the fish are often biting... I'm a big fan.

I won't show a pic of my raingear cause it's all mismatched, just various stuff I picked up here-and-there... it works though. Had our first good solid storm a week or so ago, so I put it all on and went and sat in the yard for an hour... stayed nice and dry except for the cuffs of my jeans. (I'm tall and it's a drag trying to find rainpants long enough without being too huge around the waist; guess I need gaiters.)

I'm sure the neighbors think I'm loony. :D

My only gripe with raingear is that no matter how breathable they say the materials are nowdays be it the latest offering from Goretex or watever, you still end up sweating buckets when you have to hike uphill or when the rain stops and the sun comes out.
For the most part I'd rather wear a heavyweight wool shirt and be slightly damp but still warm and have that extra breathability !

Let's see,.... sitting here at work or being outside and rained on.

No brainer, I don't have enough sense to come in out of the rain. :D

Yeah, I can understand that for sure. I'm like wool and fleece clothing a lot. However, I consider my poncho and rain pants to be a form of shelter, not just for walking in the rain, but for hiding from it at the end of the day. Plus, when wool gets good and wet, it stays that way! Not so with a basic poncho, etc.

Nice pictured pitdog.

There really aren't any perfect solutions for hiking in the the wet. I still prefer my gortex when I'm really in the slop but you are right - they aren't as breathable as marketted. Then again, I remember the oldy vinyl slickers we used to wear and their is a world of improvement. Pitzips do help especially when the jacket has waterproof zippers that allow the zipper and opened zip to be opened unhindered by velcro cover flaps. The latter only serves to reseal your pits after you begin walking again.

In cold and wet I don't have a problem as I wear my Buffalo Systems clothing which is a Pertex outer with pile lining, even though not classed as waterproof I never get wet and they are totally breathable but it has to be pretty cold to wear them !

great pics as usala was maisy smileing at you for taking her out in the rain:D

I agree, hiking in raingear I get just as wet as I would without it. :(

In all but the heaviest of rain I wear a large brimmed hat and a canvas vest that is treated to be water proof and features large vents in the panels under the arms.

This combo keeps my torso fairly dry, even if my limbs get quite wet, I stay comfortable. :)
