Wetterlings axe - which one ?

I like the small for splitting kindling. If you will be doing more than that, yup, go bigger. Wetterlings are fantastic tools.

I think I would get the larger one, because I like to carry an axe in my pack, not on my belt. The larger one should be a pretty descent chopper.
I agree. I generally prefer small axes (17-18 inches) to hatchets (12-13 inches) as a "carry" chopper. The axe is still small enough to carry on your pack without too much trouble, but being larger than the hatchet has more power, is easier to use, and I think safer to use, too.

Man...you are gonna be set. Wetterlings, Becker, and Case. Nessmuk would be proud :)

They'll make e great set!
But there are too many great things to buy and not so much cash,so the BK-2 will wait maybe a month or so untill I buy it,but I'll get one for sure :D

I just got the clearing axe, and I think it's the perfect size, especially if you're gonna be strapping it to your pack anyway.

How much more does 6 inches of handle weigh? not much. How much additional use can you get out of the axe with said 6 inches? Alot.

I'm very glad I decided to go with the full size. The large hunting axe would also be a decent choice.

Go with the bigger one. I have the light ax in both Wetterlings and GB, the GB hatchet, and the S&N double bit (I like axes). The way I look at it, the hatchet is convenient to have around instead of a big knife. The light ax is almost a necessity in cold weather.

There are a few things you shold know about the Wetterlings, though. First, it's a great ax and you'll be very satisfied with it. But, I think they may cut a corner or two to compete with GB. I can't quible with the ax head - I think it's as good a GB. But I think you should be prepared to repair the sheath - the strap holding it to the ax might break. You may also have to prepare for the head coming loose from the handle. Both these repairs can be handled easily, so don't let them make you dissapointed with the tool. It's a fine one.

I can have a great sheath made for it by a guy in my town.
But getting the axe head loose souns bad - I would be quite unpleasent happening in the wildernss.

The blade cover that came with my wetterlings is top notch, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a bunch of Wetterlings, the only packable size I dont have is the size of the GB SFA (which I own). I really like the smallest one, or the limbing axe, its not that much bigger than the 19" handled version and you can get a lot more swing into in.

Ray Mears likes the SFA size, but if its cold where you live and a bigger tool would be 'better' then go with the bigger size IMHO.

Many differnent names being posted for the same model here? What are the listed names by Wetterlings? GB? Prices?

For me, the wetterlings large hunter is the way to go, I used it along with me nimravus almost all the time, and I could never have asked for more.

Im really happy with my Wetterlings Carpenter...it has the largest cutting edge of all the 18in haft class options.

I'd get the larger one. It can be used like the smaller one and can do more work if need be. I have a GB about the same size. It's light enough to carry and will fit in most of my packs.

Thanks for the answers, guys !
I'll be getting the larger one along with a Wenger S.I. from the same store :)

Agree with Fonly; the Wetterlings large hunter is great. Not too big and not too small. I can shave hairs with mine:)

Think I got mine for about $25 as well:D
