i just got my first decent axe, a wetterlings 19" skinning axe, the store didnt have the regular model in stock. i think this is just like the hunter axe only the butt end is rounded over. i was wondering why this is? i dont see how you could skin something with it.

I've never done this, but from what I understand, you run the rounded pull under the skin, between the skin and the underlying tissue, and it smoothly separates the skin from the carcass without cutting.

Enjoy the axe!

ah thanks i see. ive never done any type of skining myself but i plan to learn. i thought it always required a sharp edge.
by the way, is it normal for there to be a few small gaps or did mine get a bad fit?

This is normal for Wetterlings, since they are hand forged (meaning that the heads are held and moved under the machine operated heavy hammers with handheld tongs). It is an aesthetics issue only, the fit is solid! You can see this on Gransfors Bruks axes too.
