We've all got daggers, how about a cloak?

excellent thought process!
you might google recipes for "oilskin proofing cream" as DIY will cost a LOT less than buying somehting commercial.
although it might be worth trying some sno-seal out on a "dead" 100% cotton bedsheet or pilowcase to see how that works. a 2 pound tub (roughly a quart) costs less than $15.
there's also some spray on waterproofer I've seen at Dick's Sporting goods that's supposed to be decent and not as smelly or oily as camp-dry.

1066vik,

Thanks for the info. I was aware that such sealants existed but hadn't yet delved into pricing or manufacturing my own just yet. The sno-seal sounds like a good experiment. That's not too bad a price for the amount of product you get. I might look into the spray on but I've never found too great results with spray on's that I've experienced through the years.

God bless,
Adam

you're welcome - sno seal is great leather conditioner/sealer, so should be OK on cotton.

If you pattern it after a military poncho you won't look too odd.
I've made an army burrito with my poncho and poncho liner plenty of times - you can sleep OK in 3 seasons if need be.
You could even get fancy and put some basic pockets on it - one for a hand warmer (like a hoodie pullover), one as a shirt pocket-type pouch...

IMHO, it beats having a wool shirt/jacket AND carrying around a blanket to sleep in.

Tarditi,

Thanks for the input. I'm not quite intending on making a poncho out of it... though the thought has crossed my mind. Pockets are a possibility down the line. Another thing I was thinking of is running belt loops through the inside; so that I can have an attachment system to allow access to little gadgets and knives while inside. But those will not come about until after the piece is wearable and experimented with, and may not come about at all. Time shall tell.

God bless,
Adam
