Fossil whale bone that I carve comes from St Lawernce Island In the Bering Sea.The Eskimos have lived and hunted there for almost two thousand years. The back bones of the younger whales is very hard. it makes nice handle material. It can be a nice rust or light to dark brown. The one problem is It can not be transported across state lines un worked as the bowhead is still under the indangered species act(that might change soon).I think that the neatest handle material I have sold is mammoth tooth root.Chuck
