Wharncliff blade, useful/practical ?

LOL! :D You KNOW it's true! :D

All a matter of taste I suppose. I much favor the finer point of the wharncliffe, finding it much more useful than that on the lambsfoot or sheepsfoot.

I've discovered that I don't really like an entirely straight edge though. This modified wharncliffe, with just the hint of curve is my pick.

The wharncliffe is crazy good for whittling!!!!

Yes they are.

I've always admired that Robeson Buzz, so much so that I looked for one for myself. Alas, no luck. I was able to find a Queen #46 with 12c27 steel though. I convexed the wharncliffe. She's crazy sharp now.

Just a hint indeed. I know I've seen that photo/knife before and I never noticed the slight curve until you mentioned it. Interesting blade.

I really like the utility of the slightly rounded wharncliffe on my Loveless also. It definitely adds to the versatility

The Robeson has given me many fond memories. Lots of days whittling on summer vacations. Other days of just pulling it out, along with a half-carved something-or-other, from my pants pocket while woods walking. It's a great knife. I still use it, but not as much as I used to. It's getting a bit small for my aging hands. It's got a wicked sharp blade though. So thin that it's even a tad flexible. Cuts through bass wood like nuthin' else.

Is that #46 the same exact pattern? It sure looks like it.

I don't know how you did it. The half-whittler is an awesome little knife, but even with my relatively young, medium-sized hands it's quite small. Every time I settled in for a long whittling session I'd reach for a larger stockman. It's a shame too, I don't have any other dual bladed, single spring knives that have the walk-and-talk nailed for both blades like this one.

Oh well, at least it's still in the family. I gave it to my daughter for those times she wants to whittle with Daddy. It fits her hands much better.

Yup. The half-whittler is Queen's #46 pattern. There have been many iterations of it over the years. Under Queen's own stamp, as a Robeson, even as a collaboration with Dan Burke.

I have the Dan Burke half whittler and it's my favorite knife to bring to work where I cut a lot of intricate shapes out of paper. I love it so much that I purchased the queen 46 in pearl. The knife was wonderful but the blades were MUCH THICKER. I ended up giving the queen to my stepfather this Father's day. I recently visited with him and he had the knife on him, he's in love with it. It's a great pattern.

thanks for all of the replies and photos.

you guys are the best. thanks again

It's great for tip work, but really hard to do precise slicing with the middle, since you can't focus the pressure along a curve.

I like the Sheepsfoot better than the Wharncliffe because I'm worried that the small tip might break off if I accidentally torque it.

I have only had this #57 a few hours and have mostly polished off that nasty etching on the blade, patina will take care of the rest, i have sharpened the blade up a touch and given the covers some Ren wax polish to gussy it up and as much as i like my smaller knives this little #57 sits just right in the hand, it reminds me of the Northfield Geppetto that i foolishly let go. I am not sure about whittling but this two and a quarter inch blade is just about perfect for my needs.
