can any one tell me what the intended purpose for a wharncliff blade is? I tried looking it up, but couldn't find anything. I just successfully made my first blank in this style and it turned out really nice, however everyone I show it to, asks me what the blade is used for. Any help would be appreciated:confused.

Thanks,
Dave

As I understand it, the Wharncliffe design was made for the Baron of Wharncliffe in the early 1800's. The Baron was an avid carver and whittler and commissioned a blade he thought was suited for his hobby. A straight edge with a curved tip that was narrower and longer than a sheepsfoot, and thicker across the spine.

I'll try to find the article later today if I can.

From a background in the construction trades, the good old utility knife is the go-to tool for a lot of people. I don't think it's just coincidence that it's blade shape is basically that of a wharncliff. I personally believe it's the most functional shape for the most common everyday uses. That being said, it's not the most pleasing looking shape to a lot of people but can grow on them after they see it's practicality.
