Through my trials and tribulations of finding traditional folders that I can open, I have finally settled on a couple patterns that work for me - with a huge thanks to everyone here who has helped me along the way!

This however has limited my exploration of other patterns. As I comb through the threads here everyday, quite often I am taken by other patterns that I would love to try but know that I just wouldn't be able to open them easily. With that said, I want to further explore one pattern at a time as I find ones that really jump out at me - right now it is patterns with a Wharncliffe blade.

One that has really jumped off the pages for me is the new GEC #48 (Improved Trapper?) but as soon as I found a pic with the knife closed I know I would not be able to open it.

Then I go on a search for other patterns with the Wharncliffe. At my recent visit to the Case Visitor Center, one knife that really struck me that day was the Desk Knife which is at the top of my next buy list. This one fits the bill for me being a fixed blade with Wharncliffe blade and a swayback type pattern:

While the Desk Knife is perfect for me, I can't help but look more into this pattern in a folder. I come across the Case Swayback Jack which fits the bill with the blade and pattern, but again looking at it in the closed position I would not be able to open it. Plus, the closed length being 3 3/16" makes it a bit on the small size for me to handle.

I just love this Case knife but once again frustrated........

Are there any other similar patterns/blades that would be a bit larger and possible able to pinch open?

Stan, the Otter Webermesser comes in mind :)

I love this pattern, actually!

Stan,
I'm not sure if you've seen the 53's but the Wharncliffe blade sets up pretty high when closed. The clip, not so much. It is a big knife too, ~ 4 1/8" long.

hope this helps. I like it a lot. My fat hand can hold on to it pretty well, the smallest knife I like is no less than 3 1/2" long.

The Desk Knife is a dandy! Mine is scary sharp now and I used it for food at my desk. I wish the leather was vegetable tanned...keep having to wash it after taking it from the sheath.

If you're looking for a Wharnie (single blade) that's really easy to open, you should be satisfied with the Schatt & Morgan Swayback Clasp "File & Wire" Series #6. It's a big and beautiful blade (the strong tip makes it more a lambsfoot than a wharnie...) and it has such a soft spring that I'm just disgusted : I love those bear trap springs and more...

Oh man.....I am a huge fan of my S&M toothpick (F&W series 5 worm groove bone) that this may be just what I am looking for!

Yes, exactly this... Your picture is what I'm talking about. Seems you already got it, don't look further.

Yes - I'm stopping right here with this one. It fits the bill for me - large (5" closed), very light pull, Wharncliffe single blade, ATS 34 steel, worm groove bone, F&W series.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I was hoping my thread would bring out a knife I was looking for that I didn't know about - mission accomplished!

Really happy you found your grail. I could rate this knife at five stars if it wasn't for the weak spring. My disappointment is your delight ! Great. Otherwise, fit & finish is what one expects from Schatt & Morgan : gorgeous and classy. The blade came so sharp on mine that I didn't touch it up. And I'm a sharpness fusser...

Glad you found what you were seeking. Wow 5" closed - a BIG folder!

Yeah - it hit me just a bit ago that they are just a big as my large toothpicks! But big is good for me with my holding/handling any knife - not so good for pocket carry but I rarely do that.

Now just to save up for this one - now I have 2 on my next buy list...........

While more sheepfootish, this guy looks like it will be very pinchable ;)

Great-looking knife :)

One more to think about: case 6149wez. Might even be a few on that auction site.
