Thought I would post a belated update here......

A few days after creating this thread, I received an email special from a vendor that just happened to include the Case Desk knife - and even in the handle choice that I had made - the smooth blue bone. This once again is another great knife for me! It's funny though - you can look and look at the dimensions of a knife on-line, but it almost always seems so different when you have it in your hands - this knife is really small for a fixed blade!

And for size comparison - the first is with a standard #8 Opinel - then with the Case Back Pocket:

Funds are tight so I am going to have to wait a bit before I can get that Schatt & Morgan......

Oh, would you look at that-- not just my favorite Case bone, but some of my favorite bone of all time. With that blade shape and handle ergonomics?!

Congratulations!

:)

-- Does the sheath have any sort of fastener or loop on the back, or is it made to lie flat-- like, on a desk, for example (what say)? I'm guessing the latter, given the knife's name and designed purpose.

The sheath is flat/smooth on the back. So yes, it does lay flat on a desk, but also works very nicely for front pocket carry.

Through my trials and tribulations of finding traditional folders that I can open, I have finally settled on a couple patterns that work for me - with a huge thanks to everyone here who has helped me along the way!

This however has limited my exploration of other patterns. As I comb through the threads here everyday, quite often I am taken by other patterns that I would love to try but know that I just wouldn't be able to open them easily. With that said, I want to further explore one pattern at a time as I find ones that really jump out at me - right now it is patterns with a Wharncliffe blade.

One that has really jumped off the pages for me is the new GEC #48 (Improved Trapper?) but as soon as I found a pic with the knife closed I know I would not be able to open it.

Then I go on a search for other patterns with the Wharncliffe. At my recent visit to the Case Visitor Center, one knife that really struck me that day was the Desk Knife which is at the top of my next buy list. This one fits the bill for me being a fixed blade with Wharncliffe blade and a swayback type pattern:

While the Desk Knife is perfect for me, I can't help but look more into this pattern in a folder. I come across the Case Swayback Jack which fits the bill with the blade and pattern, but again looking at it in the closed position I would not be able to open it. Plus, the closed length being 3 3/16" makes it a bit on the small size for me to handle.

I just love this Case knife but once again frustrated........

Are there any other similar patterns/blades that would be a bit larger and possible able to pinch open?

If you are judging the No. 48 improved trapper by the picture you show above, then you are drawing a wrong conclusion from a wrong photo. While I don't have a closed photo to show you here, I can say that the improved trapper is not difficult to open either blade. You really should look a bit closer I think.

I don't fully know your situation, and therefore may be off base. I have one in smooth ivory bone and it is a superb knife. IMO one of GEC's best offerings to date. As I've said before, the improved trapper is the knife I was hoping the 2012 forum knife would be. It'd be even better looking in Northfield dress, but might not be as easy to open as the Tidioute version.

This wharncliffe copperlock might interest you. They come up occasionally on the famous auction site. Just have to be patient.
