I finished this one up over the weekend just in time for xmas, which is handy as it is intended as an xmas present for someone.

Some vital statistics before the pictures:

Blade and Spring: Hand Rubbed Satin Finish 3/32 inch thick O1 steel
Liners and Bolsters: Nickel Silver
Handle: Black Linen Micarta

Overall Length: 165mm
Closed Length: 98mm
Blade: 60mm

I am quite happy with how this one came out. The spring is flush in the open, closed and half stop positions. I had a little problem with the design that meant I could have made the blade longer but that will be fixed on the next one I make and the pivot pin has shown up after opening and closing the knife a couple of times but I have heard that is a common problem and I am not too sure what can be done about it, maybe bashing the pins a bit more next time. I am hoping to finish a few more of these for the Canberra Knife Show at the end of January.

If anyone can give me any tips on how to stop the pivot pins from showing up please let me know.

Beautiful blade. I'm not sure about the pivot pin but my understanding is that if you polish the blade it shows the pin. That's how you find it when you're repairing a knife, you buff out the bolster to show the pin.

The pin kinda depends on how you peen it, and making sure you don't get any lubracant in it before you put the pin in, something about the lube will make a ring you can't get rid of.
did you use a reamer before you put the pivot pin in?

I didn't add any lubricant before putting the pin in at all. I don't have a reamer either I just drilled out the hole to 3/32 and counter sunk the bolsters to depth of around 1mm or so before peening the pins.

Being able to see the pin or not, it's still a great looking piece. Someone is going to be a happy camper when they get that on Christmas.

Took me alot of practice to get to where I couldn't see the pin. Do you use a visor/magnifier? It helps when your peening, you don't have to hit it like a mad man, just alot of small taps with the business end of a small ball peen.

Yeah the ones on the back bolster are invisible it was just ones on the pivot pin end that are showing up. I don't use a visor or anything but I can see how it would be handy to have one. I don't have a bushing or anything in there and I have read that would help with stopping the pin from spinning. I have some ordered now so the next lot of knives will be using them and hopefully that will help.

The knife looks great, what Rusty said about no oil on the pin and possibly getting it shorter to start with. Usually a couple of good whacks dead flat and then start peening around the edge. I've heard you can wail away if you use bushings and not tighten things up, though I don't use them so coming from me its hearsay.

I am sure they will turn out a bit better on the next knife. This only my second slip joint and this first knife I have ever peened anything on. You might be right about having the pins a touch too long as well.
