I have been admiring all the great looking blades you guys and gals have been posting recently. And my interest has changed from the large locking type to more of the traditional. I really like the wharncliffe blade and was wondering who makes them in micarta? At a. "budget " price would be great also. Probably nobody. Right? Thanks for any help..

GEC makes two, the 47 and the 92. Both come in od green micarta. Those world be the most affordable choices.

Todd Davidson will do a linerless in micarta which are very cheap compared to liners.[/QUOTE]

I love his work. But I can't afford that any time in the near future. Cheap compared to the linerlocks is probably still out of reach for me. Thanks though.

Can't recommend the 47 or the 92 enough. Agree with Kyle, be on the hunt for a micarta viper~ It was my absolute favourite out of the 3 vipers I've had thus far.

A #47 in green micarta sits in my pocket daily and is a great knife. Slim in the pocket but handles big tasks well.

The crkt spew was my first fixed. My first folder was the kershaw leek. That traditional looks nice also thanks op

Well, a little more expensive and not in stock would have been the Northwoods Hawthorne which is based on a GEC #48 frame.

I expect any micarta 47s to sell out within 3-4 days so be quick!

Just get a micarta 83 and grind that bad boy on a belt grinder into a wharnie!!:foot::gasp::wink:

i swaw one go on the exchange last week for $35, I felt sick when I saw that!

That 47 looks like it should be in my pocket. I look at the exchange ALOT too. And it seems when I have a little spare cash I don't see anything that strikes my fancy. But when I'm broke. Boom great deals everywhere. maybe the stars will Aline soon. Thanks for all the insight everybody.

It takes about 5 minutes to convert a Schrade 194OT to a wharncliffe blade (maybe a little longer if you are using just a fille and stones). Did it in a college dorm room 30 years ago with just a stone, and even that didn't take long.

I recently found a 12ot with the tip snapped off. I made it look almost like a wharncliffe. Looks like the194 would make a decent looking wharny though. Post a pic if you still have it. Here's mine. Thanks for the input.

I just reread your post. Doubt you have it 30 years later.

I couldn't find any good light to take this picture, but these are 3 fine examples of what you are looking for. Love these...

Dunlap Swayback
GEC 47
GEC 92

^^^^ that IS 3 fine examples. Real nice. And thanks for the side by side comparison.

you are very welcome. you can't go wrong with either. but if you have med to large size hands I'd say the 47 Viper would feel a bit better in than than the 92
