Wharncliffe trapper

Nobody knows?

I think I remember an old article in Knife World magazine about a hardware chain called Hawbaker (?) back maybe in the 30's, that had trappers with a warnie blade.

But then after all those years in the machine shop breathing aluminum dust, I could have alzimers!

Sorry to sidetrack things slightly, but on a similar theme...when did the trapper patterns first appear?

Do u remember the thread in which A.G. was looking for opinions and suggestion re. new slipjoints that he wanted to have made that would fit between production manufactures and custom makers ?
In recieving a reply he mentioned that the first knife to be produced will be.... a two blade Wharncliffe Trapper.
That's all I know.

Wow...there's a gap in the collective database? smiling-knife, thats another good question. I'm clueless, just wondering.

A true trapper is a jack knife that has two blades of the same size; usually consisting of a clip master blade and a long spey blade. The style was developed around 1920 and was quickly embraced by fur trappers. The blade configuration made them very useful for skinning

I've been looking at those for a while. Wish they offered a more, er, "traditional" color, like amber, their "bonestag", or something. I actually had one such in my hand at the OKCA show in April and didn't buy it. It appeared to be a standard Amber Stag Bone in this pattern, for a very good price. It was at the table of a well known Internet vendor. I got to thinking about other things and didn't get it. Now I wish I had. I contacted the vendor about it, but they never bothered to return my email...

Love the wharncliff trappers and the seashorse whittlers.

Unimpressed by peoples feelings about Tru-Sharp.

Now if Case starts making them using CV, count me quickly in.

Ok, Ok, how about ATS 34 for steel on a wharncliff trapper..

I like the Wharncliffe blade very much indeed, excellent for cheese or salami slicing:thumbup: Must be stainless though!

As I live in the EU I can't examine CASE or other makers patterns in the metal so I depend on your advice and the better pix that some on-line dealers offer,CASE pictures are usually not photos.

How about this GREEN APPLE scale colour? What's it like in reality? Could be interesting but could be vulgar and lurid:barf: I'd like a Wharncliffe Trapper but most of the handles are not trad or 'folksy':D no Bonestag or red bone or yellow in this pattern. So I may be risking it a bit with this green apple.... Ideas?

I find some of Cases' colors much too bright, "lurid" (to borrow your term) and somewhat childish, to be honest. I can't imagine wanting a "Bubba Gum" (bright pink) anything, though I suppose if I were buying a Peanut for an 8 year old girl, or just had to fill out a collection with every color available, but really.

Even their current Red Bone leaves me cold. Fire engine red that fades to pinkish white at the edges? This is "traditional"? This is what we expect from Case? The company that popularized yellow Delrin? The green ones I've seen are really bright, harsh, and ugly, too. (Why does everything have to be in "neon" colors these days, anyway?)

It really kinda torques me that they play this game with only certain models available in certain handle materials, then change it slightly year to year. I know it's to tweak collector's interest, but I really don't want to wait till "next year" to see if the knife I want happens to be available.

FWIW, I'm in exactly the same boat with this Wharncliff Trapper. If they had one in a "normal" handle material I'd own it already. But since the most traditional looking material they have is "Sunset Orange Bone", I think I'll wait.

Unless you want to pay twice the price for a stag one, of course... I have a hard shaking loose $90 for a non-collaboration Case knife, though.

Now Sam, that neon pink "Bubba Gum" has it's place. It's to distract the non-knife people while you're cutting whatever needs cutting. They're so blinded/distracted by the glowing handle that they forget there's even a blade attatched to it! ;) :D

Or overcome with nausea:barf:

Beginning to have cold feet about that Green Apple...pity because that Wharncliffe Trapper is a SERIOUS pattern that calls for smooth bone, yellow handle, or even plain black be OK.
