If I may ask, what's the pull on the pen blade? The one I have is darn near a nail breaker. Just curious if that is normal.

Besides this one, I've owned two others and the pen blades on all 3 have pretty stout pulls. Also, it's not easy to get a good purchase on the nail nick (even though there's a small cut-out in the handle)... so that compounds the problem. In short, very hard to open without a pick.

What’s the metal used in these if you don’t mind me asking ? I just picked up one and was just curious , I’ve seen reports of 1095 and reports of stainless ??

This blade combination is honestly a bit silly. Maybe I just don’t whittle enough? I do like it for opening packages on Christmas morning, though.

Silly combination ?
My guess is you don't whittle.
It's one of the greatest design GEC has ever produced.
Maybe for whittlers only.

Here’s a neat GEC whittler I don’t see pop up too often. #62 with wedged spring.

I think the difference is subtle but this one should be a 'sheepsfoot'? The edge and the back of the blade is parallel before dropping toward the point (though it doesn't look like it in the photo due to perspective).

This one should be Wharncliffe?
