Up until recently I was able to find what I wanted at a local hobby store sadly they’ve goon out of business and there isn’t anyone else locally that carries what I want.

Where do you guys go for Diamond stropping compound?

Would something like this get the job done? The stuff I used to use came in what looked like a travel sized tube of tooth paste as opposed to a syringe.

I've use some of the lapidary stuff with good results. Sometimes the stuff is rather slow though. I think the cheaper stuff has a lot less diamond in it.

Admittedly, I don't strop as much as some, though.

I highly recommend Hand American diamond spray. It is the highest diamond concentration I have found, is well suspended in solution and works better than a lot of other products out there. There are a lot of stropping threads here and many have a similar opinion of the Hand American spray.

I'm very satisfied with the 1 micron diamond spray from Hand American.

I think I got mine at Japanese knife sharpening dot com. They are great. It is a blue liquid. I got 1 micron and some green cr oxide powder .3 micron. They shipped fast, and are great. I use compressed leather from Hand American for strop. I know Jason says use medium density fiberboard for diamond spray, it is better than leather. I get very good results, but will get some soon. I am sure he is right. Have fun.

Good-DMT compound, found almost everywhere DMT products are sold.

Better- amplex, found at classicshaving.com

Best- handamerican

Where are you guy scoring your Hand American from? I talked to the owner 2 weeks ago and he said his site would be up in a week, but I checked today and it's still down.

Also, I've seen 10, 12, 18, 21 carat sprays from other companies. What carat size is optimal and anything else you might want to share about what carat size/concentration is sufficient. :)

carat content refers to how much diamond is in the bottle, not the size of the diamond. The higher the number the more effective the compound.

Cool, once the site goes back up I think I’ll buy some of the hand America spray.

I wonder though, why I can’t find any more of the stuff locally. This isn’t exactly a small town we’ve got dozens of hardware, home improvement and hobby stores. 10 minutes with Google shows that diamond paste has a lot of uses not just in knife sharpening you’d think it wouldn’t be so hard.

The hand american is priced per carat. So you are paying the same amount for what you get so it is just up to you to decide how much you want. Also 12 carats in the 4 oz bottle is going to have a higher concentration than 21 carats in an 8 oz bottle. To me it doesn't matter what carat content you get and one is not going to work better than another because you can just add more of the less concentrated stuff. Maybe if you were only allowed one spray then the higher concentration would work better but higher carat content doesn't mean higher concentration. Anyways, I think you will be happy with the hand american and I'm surprised you cant order it over the phone.

Edit: it looks like you can order the spray now on his website.

I think I’m gonna go with the 4 ounce bottle, I don’t use a lot and have a hard time seeing myself using more then 1 or 2 bottles in a year.

I couldn't order via the phone. In fact the owner told me to go with a hard, finished, leather strop after the green (non-diamond) paste??

If you check out the website by taking off the section at the end of the URL and use the index page address, it shows them to be "down"

I saw that page earlier but I don't want to place an order on an orphaned page that google still has in their index.

Here's what I'm looking at for a link to accessories before I order: http://www.handamerican.com/

That other URL may work fine, but it may not for all I know?

You could always call Keith, his number is on the bottom of the page and he's a cool guy.

EDIT: Just for kicks I went through the "order & checkout" pages that were provided and they're working fine. I was watching for it to change from http to https (means secure) at the credit card stage. You should be good to go.

I have 2 8 oz bottles, one 1 micron and one 0.5 micron both 18 carat. At the rate I'm using it I anticipate them lasting 10 or 15 years. You don't need much and the diamond doesn't just stop working all the sudden so it doesn't need to be reapplied often.

I went with the 8 oz bottle because usually less is more when it comes to compound and I didn't want to get a thick layer with a high concentration. I figured it is easy enough to add some more if I didn't think it was enough.

His website is down quite often and I'm pretty sure when I ordered I found the page with google and it was not linked to on the home page like now.

Thats not how it works, the carat content is by volume.

If you'd care to elaborate a little, I'm sure we'd all like to hear you explain what this stuff means to us. :)

Does everyone prefer diamond spray over regular CO compound? I use bark river compound but the black is so very difficult to apply to the strop. So much so that I wouldn't mind finding a better solution though I heard diamonds can scratch the edge. I'm looking for a mirrored polish. Can that be achieved with diamonds? I sure like thought of simply spraying my strop with a few pumps rather than battling the black bark river compound.

Diamond spray makes regular compound look like toothpaste.

If it were the case my 5gram tube of 1 carat DMT diamond paste would work faster than my 8oz bottle of 12 carat HA spray but it does not.
