I am assuming that when the word "titanium" is mentioned, that it is in reference to commercially pure. I agree about commercially pure, and even 6-4 titanium alloy as not having good edge holding ability. Mission makes the highest alloyed titanium available. The only thing we don't add is steel to our mixture. For those interested, I have previously posted on the new low-cost betas that should be on the market by 2001. (note: there are as many titanium alloys as there are steel alloys, so please be more specific when mentioning the word "titanium". It's like someone saying "I have a steel knife and it doesn't hold an edge" - Which grade of steel/alloy are you using, what is the hardness, etc.?)
Many companies are now jumping on the titanium bandwagon. Buyer beware. OceanMaster (a company located in Los Angeles that is a front company to a taiwan manufacturer using Russian titanium) now claims to manufacture and sell a "beta" titanium dive knife. I sent it to our lab and guess what - it is NOT beta tianium. In fact, it is dead soft at RC28. Again, buyer beware.
Now to Mr. Jim6 question. titanium, as any other metal will set off a metal detector, titanium, along with aluminum, gold, etc, will not set off a magnetometer.
Cliff - Does our titanium alloy hold an edge? Yes, about like 440A stainless. Does any other grade of titanium alloy? No.
Titanium is not for everyone, that's why we are making steel blades also. But when one wants a virtually indestructable knife, titanium alloy is the correct choice. I guess that's why (a) the US Navy has purchased over 3000 MPKs, (b) the MPK has a National Stock Number 1386-01-417-1263, and (c) a NATO stock number 1386-01-417-1263.
