image.jpg Making three 10” chefs knifes for Christmas gifts for family members. Got them cut out and shaped, pin holes drilled. I need to drill some bridge holes in the handle. Should I grind or HT? steel is .126 thick x 1084 I did read the HT or grind thread. Do I need to sand these at all before HT or just a waste with the de carb? I am leaning towards heat treating these then grinding followed by sanding. Then work on the Mesquite handles. Am I missing any steps?

If you want to grind after HT, I would scribe your edges and grind 45 degrees to the line before HT. They will just be harder to scribe after the fact and that first initial bevel is tough on belts even with soft steel. Then I would grind the faces flat so you have a flat reference surface for post HT straightening.
