So I'm almost done building my 2 x 72 grinder and going to be ordering some 1095 and going to probably be working primarily with 1095 for a while. I also plan on doing mostly flat grinds vs hollow grinds. I mainly will be making drop point hunting knives to start for a while. I have a small budget but would rather spend a little more for something that lasts a little longer. What type/brand grit belts would you all recommend I get to start off with for what I've described I want to do that would allow me to go from start to finish?

I've been working primarily with 1095 because I have some left over from jobs at work. I've been roughing with zirconium 36 and 60 grit belts, then jumping to 120 Blaze. I've tried a few different higher grit belts for finishing that I haven't really liked and am hoping the Trizacts I ordered arrive soon.

Are you going to leave a belt finish, hand rubbed or polished finish? For your initial bevels you want ceramic belts around 50 grit. This are also used to flatten the knife out and remove scale. Next you can go to another ceramic belt but up to 120-150. Then on to 220 or so. This is where I go to the gator belts in an A100(I think) or an A65. From there you can hand sand. If you want a machine finish go to an A45 or cork belts in 400-600. As far as the brand of the ceramics I use either the cubitrons or the Norton blaze.

Thank you both for the replies. Most definitely a belt finish but probably will do some polished along the way. Really want to do acid wash and etching or something like KG-Gunkote.

The cubitron 2s eat steel well. Another one I use for carbon are the Hermes 466 from Pop's. They're terrific people to deal with and are very helpful if you have questions about belt recommendations.
The next belts I'm going to try myself are the vsm's. It seems several people on here use them and they're inexpensive.
