What a Good Heat Treatment Can and Cannot Do

Great article Larrin.

I cant wait to get an oven and work with a few steels I have been using.
I know Zwear is Great with low temper. Thanks to Willie71 Willie71 he gave me great direction for that. Excellent results.

Now my next focus is Vanadis 8.
I've gotten it t to 62/63 via Peter's. I'm shooting for 64. Might have to benchrace about lower tempering temps for more hardness. Might even be able to hit 65ish.

A lot of those high alloy non-stainless steels can hit 66+ with cryo and a low temper, including 10V, K390, and Vanadis 8. 3V is the odd man out being limited to around 64 Rc.

Do you think there are significantly difference on wear resistance low vs high tempering on these steel at same hardness?

I’ve only gone to Rc64/65 with z-wear. I’m sure Rc66 is doable. M2 and M4 easily get Rc66+.
