What-A-Knife, What-A-Saw, What-A-Combo!!

I've been using a Whatasaw around the house for decades. I bought several from The Sportsman's Guide so long ago I can't really say when it was. They're excellent saws, stow small and light and used to be dirt cheap. I won't drop $50 for one, but I think I paid like $12 back in the day. But, I've never heard of the Whataknife.

btb01 btb01 Thank you very much for the Dura-Tool and for opening up another knife worm hole!!

I had fun carrying mine this week, Barrett!View attachment 2957011View attachment 2957012

Nice, Dave! They’re handy little knives, and can really disappear in your pocket.

Really enjoyed re-reading this thread - one of the few benefits of my declining memory

Great in-use shot of your What-A-Knife, Jack!

I’m a little behind in sharing my newest What-A-Knife addition, which arrived in the mail a few weeks ago. Thanks again RickHuf RickHuf for sending this very interesting Sword Brand stamped What-A-Knife my way!:thumbsup:

I thought I’d add a quick little update to this thread, as I got a new What-A-Knife in the mail the other day.

Ok, me buying another What-A-Knife certainly isn’t newsworthy, but this is one that has been missing from my collection for a while, so I’m excited to have it (or rather, to have it again).

The very first What-A-Knife that I ever bought was a single-blade version. There’s a photo of it in the first post of this thread. Now, it wasn’t particularly what I was looking for at the time I bought it — what I really wanted was one with a cap-lifter — but the single-blade was just the first one I found. When I did eventually get a cap-lifter What-A-Knife, I gifted the single-blade to a friend.

There were two things I didn’t know at the time. First, I didn’t know I would become mildly obsessed with these little knives and eventually want to have every variation I could get my hands on. And second, despite having found the single-blade first, I didn’t know that the cap-lifter version was by far the most common, and that the single-blade would be harder to replace than I realized. For a few years now I’ve been keeping my eye out for one. I even missed one a year or so back, outbid on an eBay auction that went higher than I expected.

But, as they say, good things come to those who wait. I finally found another single-blade What-A-Knife, for a fairly reasonable price (a little more than I’d usually pay for a standard cap-lifter model, but less than the one I got outbid on), and I’m happy to have rounded out the trio of What-A-Knife blade configurations.

(Of course, there could always be something else out there I just don’t know about yet. It’s certainly a possibility, as evidenced by the Sword Brand stamped What-A-Knife I was unaware of until RickHuf RickHuf shared it in this thread.)

Seeing all the blade options has me wondering if the caplifter and pen blades would play well in a three blade franken-what-a-knife…

I'd like to see you get a full dozen of variations, with a punch, and wharncliffe, a spear, a hoofpick ... haha

You know, it’s not a terrible idea… 🤔😁

There are certainly more variations of the very similar Dura-Tool stamped knives. There’s a TL-29 type I think, and a big hawkbill pruner. Those are certainly on my radar (the only Dura-Tool model I have so far is the one I shared earlier in this thread, identical to the cap-lifter What-A-Knife with a bail), but I have to admit that my interest is primarily in the ones stamped What-A-Knife.
