As many of you who frequent this forum and from recent thread concerning the discontinuance of the rosie s30v folding Kalinga may know, I have had this knife on my "most wanted, must have" list pretty much since I really got into trying to become a Buck collector a little over a year ago. Well it came today and I am not disappointed. I have been on pins and needles watching the progression of tracking on the USPS site and got my wish and like the title says, What a knife. This thing is more beautiful than any pics I've seen can show. Its a big honkin folder with great lines, a spectacular blade shape and perfect balance and feel. Hair poppin sharp right out of the box. I got a pretty big paw but as you can see it takes up the better part of all 5 fingers.(sorry for not enlisting 300's photography pointers-this was done on a whim-next time I promise.)

Of course I know many of you have this knife already and even to those who don't, none of this comes as a surprise based on your knowlege of Buck quality and design but I just had to crow about it .What a knife!!! Thanks Buck-but it begs the question, Why stop making such an absolute jewel?

Yours Bedazzled
Fritz

These are nice knives and you will enjoy it.

In one of my obsessive compulsive cleaning sprees after I actually used one on a deer, I pulled the wood and was a little surprised at what I found. The inside back of the wood had a lot of "grime" left over and the brass was less than finished smooth. Which I took as a challenge to "fix" what wasn't really broken.

So I cleaned off the wood with a tooth brush and some go-jo, let it dry good, and then sealed it with a few coats of tru-oil.

While the tru-oil dried a couple days or so, I went at the metal under the wood, with the brasso and ultimately it cleaned up as nice as the bolsters.

I liked it so much better after my bout of OCD.:D

Use a tiny dab of blue locktite when you go back in with the screws.

Congrats Fritz!

I knew you'd like this knife. Now you have another issue to decide: "To Use or Not Use?"
That's a hard one. g

I've given that a little thought already and have decided easy use carry with a backup edc user available if something comes up

I don't have a rosie but I do have a rubber one. It is a fine looking knife. I have been looking at rosies but the price is always a bit high. I like my rubber one with the black sheath.

I have felt the same way about the price but just ended up doing it against my wifes wishes and my better financial judgement. I knew it was a must have and would pay more later. One of the other issues I had was could I effectively sharpen s30v. I sharpened my Vantage with no problem so this was a go. I love this knife so much that I now intend to get the 420hc rubber handle for hunting.

Great question.

I remember the sad day when Winchester decided they couldn't make a work of art called the Model 70 anymore because it was not making a profit. Some of us bought up a few before the prices went sky-high. We always kicked ourselves because we didn't buy more.

With the exceedingly beautiful folding Kalinga.......I suppose the answer must be similar.......that there was not enough profit in this particular model, but it would be nice if Buck would break the silence on this.

Only you would find what we leave unfinished :D Glad you got your OCD fix. I understand 'cause there are parts of my truck that are cleaned/painted that no one can see or know I did but me! IE underbody, every bolt I could find/get too, etc... :p

Imafritz, now that you have your three most wanted, the giraffe gent 532, the Csar and the folding kalinga pro - and I know they are very different knives - but do you have one that stands out as a favorite, at least for now? (Sometimes that'll change with use)

P.S. I notice the giraffe 532 gent is no longer on Buck's website. You got it in good time!

Yeah wolf, the Kallinga hands down. The 532 is sweet but I carried it with nothing in my pocket a couple days and somehow how the n/s bolsters esp left front are scratched up.:grumpy::thumbdn: so it wont be carried much if at all. The Czar is a beast and I love it and will carry it as normal part of my edc rotation which has been 110 & 347 primarily, with others as the whim strikes or condition(dress pants) dictates. But 2 things have bummed me out about it.
1st- it didnt come very sharp. I have very little sharpening skill but because Buck sends NIB knives so sharp, I am capable of keeping them that sharp with croc sticks as long as they dont get too dull. This one needed sharpened right out of the box and it still aint as sharp as I would like.

2nd the flipper holes arent finished well, the front hole has burrs on the right side and the center oblong hole hasnt been milled correctly so there is a bump in the bottom center that didnt get cleaned up smooth and it's driving me nuts. I tried to file it out but steel is too hard and I'm afraid to try and take the dremel to it for fear of screwing it up.

I was debating whether to take pics and whine about it or just let it go as a ruggedly hansome knife with a few bumps. I probably will try and take some good pics and post for everyones opinion.

I may just be whining but you asked:p

With all the expectations of the Kalinga being discontinued, I went ahead and ordered a couple of the 420HC bladed camo folder versions and another fixed blade. More stuff to stick away for my heirs I suppose.

Yeah, I've noticed that their current generation, at least, of NS bolsters take hairline scratches very easily. Last summer I ordered a CKS 110 and use it as an EDC. I noticed especially on the left front bolster several scratches and wondered how they were getting there. That front bolster was hitting the buckle snap on the sheath as I was putting it in, I found out. It does seem to be a soft metal. Nothing serious as far as buffing it out, but I think for me NS will in the future be for lookers more than users, or I won't worry and just let the scratches form as a break-in badge. With my bloody jasper 110 the scratches sort-of work with the partial chip flint look. However in general, a NS resistant to scratching would be desirable.

I've been considering doing the same with the S30V fixed blade Kalinga Pro. Get it while the getting's good.

Yeah......he who has the most spectacular auction when he dies wins.

:D

Well, stay tuned. Mine will be pretty spectacular. I'm the type, that only buys, I never sell anything and I'm a compulsive buyer. I'll leave that up to my son and grandsons.

Right now I'm looking to add to my Harley collection, although I'm running out of garage space. May have to build another one just for tha bikes.:p

A little extra garage space never hurts.

I used to sell a little on e-Bay, but it got to be a buyer's market a couple of years ago and is even moreso now.......so, why fight it? I decided to buy.

And I found......selling is work, buying is fun.

As you say, let the heirs deal with it. I have about 40 years of experience and a good instinct for buying the things that will gain in value and that's the best way to spend my time. They'll have fun at the auction and love spending the money.

:)
