I am trying to teach my 2 1/2 year old how to treat a sharp knife. I have some in the works that are not sharpened at all yet. He will hold them, and rub the spine and side with a rag (because he sees me polishing my knives when I get ready to put them away). So he point out to my wife that you can rub on the side, and the spine, but not to touch the edge, because it is sharp, and it will cut you. Maybe he will be ready to cut his cake at his 3 year birthday with my FBMLE
I'm trying to teach my 2.5 year old knife safety too, but I'm not having as much luck as Big. 
She has a high pain tolerance and likes to bleed so she can color things with her blood....I'm using a trainer knife to assess when she's ready to start with something that can cut.
