Hello all ,
i'm considering to buy a sebbie with 90% lock up at the moment. it has a blade that maybe could fit better. i want this to be a user for a number of years. However, w/ the lock up at near limits i am a little concerned and don't know what to expect in the long run.
All input appreciated. Sorry , no pics at this time.

thank you.

Questions- how long has lockup been at 90%? Where was lockup when the knife was new? Is there any blade play in any direction? What is the condition of the stop pin?

How old is the Sebenza ? CRK will not work on the older ones. If it has S30V or S35VN steel, it can be worked on.
If it is a regular, because of the blade, they may not work on it. Most of the time, they'll stay in one position for a long time.
If it's priced right, you may want to consider getting it, use it until it's wore out and send it in for a spa treatment.

Lockup was originally at about 50% I'd guess, now it's at 90... I'd guess there was a lot of flicking involved, so replacing the stop pin might recoup 10% or so.

I don't flick my knives open usually, so it would wear slowly in my posession. If the price was right and everything else checked out I'd probably do it. It'd have to be cheap though.

If it was flicked a lot I would want to see a dissassembly pic that shows the lockbar face. It can collapse especially is done repeatedly right out of the box. If it were me id only be interested if the lockbar still looked intact but just worn. Or if its just a smokin good deal. Lots a sebbies out there. No need to settle.

If it gets to 100% lock up you can send it in to Chris reeve and they will fix or replace it. But my Chris reeve came with 70% lock up and I got it a year ago and it still has 70% lock up.

Chris Reeves prefers them at 75-80% when NEW. Not to worry, it won't change.

They won't fix it if it is an older one like a Eegular with BG-42 steel.

I have a question for anyone that has owned a Sebenza with 100% lockup? What happens to the knife after it gets to 100%? Is there blade play? How does anyone know unless they actually had one!?

This question is only for those who have experienced this. No assumptions please!

I ask this question because it get put out there and tossed around a lot but I never heard from anyone that actually had this happen and I think it is quite rare.. I would love to see a video of such a knife and showing blade play.

I actually have a framelock purposefully build with late lockup, modified face (as per tests done by a knife maker in New Zealand CKC knives) with blade play. One safe lock if you ask me.

Though the market does not want that generally and I can accept that.

You'll probably get better answers in the CRK section especially in regards to what they will and won't fix.

I didnt say anything about fixing anything so I'm not sure what the quote is for. Either way. Why does it have to be a sebenza? Why cant it be a similar knife that has gone to 100% lockup. Nothing chris reeve does can be thought of as secret sauce. If you know enough about the mechanics of knives and the stages in which wear occurs and the problems that can happen as a result its not assumtions to know what will happen if the knife is continued to be used in a manner that created the 100% lockup in the first place. Even if its a sebenza. Its not like they do anything dramatically different from other Ti frame locks. Just like every single car on the road today will eventually be in a junk yard if continued to be driven. I will agree it is rare for a sebbie to get to 100% but I feel that's because most people don't abuse their sebbie.

I quoted you by accident. I meant to quote the poster above you.

Still trying to get used to this new forum format.

If you own it already, send it in.
If you are a bit handy, you can check this out. You will NOT void any warranty, as CRK recommends periodic disassembly and cleaning/re-lubing.

100% lockup or a tiny bit of vertical "tick" or play does nothing apart from bug knife collectors/users like us guys on this forum. Even if a Sebenza had 100% lockup with a tiny micro bit of play vertically, it would only make the knife less likely to ever close on your fingers if you were being silly with it. Early lockup does nothing but make you feel warm and fuzzy :) My large Sebenza 21 is currently at 65%, and if it ever hits 100% i'll just smile and continue using it. Another contributing reason being since im in Oz, i'll be dammed if i pay to send the knife away overseas to fix the lockup and be without my knife for 2-3 months for something that doesnt hinder it's ability to cut, ha.

That is just temporary and does not last after a few openings and closings.

Thanx, Colubrid, have not tried his method. I've been very happy with any of my past or present CRK's. They usually have pretty advanced lockup, but it stays there as per design.
It sounds strange, however. If the screws are tightened again nicely, why would it move around? I see in his video that it sounds much like a "flex" and perhaps temporary as you suggest.
