What about Opinel?

I found a pic of the sanding job...

It also has a few coats of satin varnish on it to seal it.

Cool, not bad for under $20, huh?

I think i've now decided on a #6 in carbon w/ lock, and I'll sand down the handles, stain it darker, and varnish or polyurethane satin finish.

Looks like $20 and a Saturday afternoon will have me a pretty nice lil front pocket knife (for the money, that is).

Thx everyone. keep them comments commin!

I have eight or nine Opinels in different sizes, all carbon steel with locking rings (I bought mine back in the late 70's and early 80's). The locking rings, at least on these older ones, are very strong and secure. I think the blade would break before the lock gave out, especially if you use it like a folding knife. The steel is great, takes a razor edge easily (and I do mean RAZOR - I won a bet shaving off three months worth of beard with one :D ). I'd say buy it, you won't be disappointed.

I'm one of the few that don't like the Opinel. Well, not liking it is too strong. They are sharp and decent cutters. They are also thin and flimsy, they won't work if you get the handles wet and although they are light, they are round and don't sit in a pocket that well.

I'm not even really a big hater, just that they aren't the greatest thing since sliced (french) bread.
