This might be a silly question, but after watching an episode of the less favorite suvivalist(he amuses me) got me thinking of eye protection. Does anyone carry some out in the field with your gear? Goggles, sunglasses, etc? I was thinking these could be kinda important not only in the bright sun or to help against snow blindness, but also trekin thru thick brush. Just a thought. Any $0.02 out there?

I think that sunglasses are on a lot of the "top ten essentials" lists. They are on mine, especially when I go canoeing.

Sunglasses for me in the desert, snow, or mountains. I know they aren't 'cool' any longer, but the style that works the best is the Bolle with the leather side shields. I don't think they protect any better against the sun, but they block out blowing sand and dust better than any wrap-around glasses I've tried.

For mountain biking, driving the convertible, and casual outdoor activities I prefer a different style that doesn't have the shields.

Sunglasses are important gear.

i find that cheap, OSHA approved tinted glasses can be found just about anywhere saftey glasses are sold, welding supply stores, PPE supply stores etc.

cheap, safe, cheap, cheap, cant get much better than that.

I always wear polaroid sunglasses when outdoors or when driving in any sort of sunlight. A nice pair of Raybans for everyday and some cheaper, more durable polaroid wraparounds for sailing, mountain biking etc.

Absolutely an important item. After spending almost a year and a half in Iraq, flying debris, dust and harsh glare are serious threats. In an outdoors situation, your eyes are extremely important and you should protect them. I've been using Oakley's Half-Jackets. Smaller sized, but still giving good eye protection. Additionally, I always carry a set of Polarized lenses AND a set of Clear (or Amber) lenses for traveling at night/dusk.

tinted wraparound safety glasses do the job for me . keeps the flies out too .

I agree with everyone here, eyes are too important to be ignored. I keep a pair of wrap-around (old oalkley style) sunglasses in my pack.

Eye pro is a big thing in the Army now because of IED's, And yes it is a very good idea in the wilds, a combo sun glasses and clear lense is what you want. Sun glasses for bright days and clear for cloudy days and nights. you can buy the combo packages from ESI, OAKLEY, and some other brands that I don't know about. If you have a froend in the Army, they can pick you up a set from military clothing and sales on base.

Good point and comments. A quick search pulled up these. They seem almost ideal and I think I just might pick myself up a pair at $60 CDN.

If I didn't bring my glasses I would not be able to see much!! I have to have a set of clip on sunglasses with me outside- especially now that I spend most days inside it has made me more sensitive to the sun. Too bad I have not found any good wrap around shades friendly to perscription glasses.

I also always have sunglasses with me. Usually smiths or oakleys. They're another thing worth dropping some money on, high optical quality doesn't come cheap, but its very nice once you've tried it. I can't wear CVS sunglasses anymore.

You should be able to get your prescription lenses made as sunglasses as well as normal glasses.

Part of my EDC is a pair of Oakley half jackets,I am so use to having a pair of sunglasses on it is not funny...Saving my eyes ;one ball at a time from sunlight to flying objects !!!

A timely topic for me. I have to buy new prescription glasses and I've been thinking about getting one pair, physically smaller than normal so as to fit easily into snow goggles for winter applications.

Anybody have any experience/suggestions with this?

Ive got some prescription sun glass's, I'd say a good 40% of people in Australia wear sunglass's. Those who don't are fools in my opinion, its too damn bright outside and you can do yourself some serious damage not wearing them.

+1

I found a pair of camo frame, tinted safety glasses at Wally World for around $3.00, added a camo strap so they hang around my neck if I don't want them on.
