What age did you give your child their first blade?

This is an interesting topic. I grew up in Ireland, in times much different than now. Kids then wandered the community at very early ages; we went everywhere walking or on our bikes without concern or regard that we'd be snapped up & carted off by some pervert. Responsibility in general was conveyed from a very young age with repercussions if you didn't rise to it both at home, in school and in the neighborhood. I was given a small knife, a sort of key chain folder, the sort of thing given as souvenirs all over Europe with a blade probably about 1" long. I remember feeling pretty grown up, like I could protect my self and family with that little knife. I remember pretty clearly my mother objecting saying he will cut himself. I remember my father saying, 'Yes he will; then he will learn'. To which I did cut my self in pretty quick fashion; more than once. I learned. Somewhere around 4 my father traded me that knife for an early 4 blade Swiss Army Knife, the beginning of many knives to come. Unless I was someplace where knives were completely illegal, i.e., courtrooms, planes, etc. I since have never been without at least one in my pocket. By the way, there were a couple guns in my household, every one was loaded. Like I said, different times....

First jack knife geesh real early on I think back then IN SCHOOL NO LESS about 80% of the BOYS AND GIRLS carried a jack knife this was circa 1977/78 or so and was like 5th grade.

I got my first "real" knife when I was 12 and my dad who at that time worked in the Ontario Knife Factory came in the living room and said tossing me a case(a knife case) here I messed this up when posishing it(blemed it) it was a folding knife but a decent size one..looked just like one of the 1970's era Buck knives..best part is it was a Ontario Knife folder, good size, with a factory leather carrying case(tan leather), that my dad had made(and messed up lol) so pretty cool..I still have the knife but the leather case is long gone unfortuantely..as I said I was about 12 and that woud have been in 1981 or there abouts.

At what age did my child get his first blade? That would be birth. Had to cut the umbilical with something, and my razor sharp wit just wasn't up to the job.

I'm pretty sure my wife is not going to agree with my decision to give my kids their first knife.
"Yes he will; then he will learn." Sounds like something my Dad and Grandfathers would say.

Gave both my sons ages 13 and 14 their first knife. They both received Spyderco Manix XL. I hope they enjoy it.
