I am having trouble deciding which kukri I should purchase.I need somthing that I can take on hikes and camping, that is not to heavy and wont attract to much attention from the law as being a weapon. I also feel more comfortable if I have some sort of edged weapon when I sleep in hotels on vacation,( I relize this sounds paranoid but it is mainly for my piece of mind.) I recently traded for an 19inch Ang Khola, on this forum. I have not yet received the knife but the pictures I have seen of it make it look massive. Im sure it is a great knife but I think I may need somthing smaller. I am thinking about a British Army Service Model But I am not sure. I would appreciate any information On this subject.

Thank you,
Randy

One more question, Any time I go near the woods to camp or for hiking and I cary anything other than a pocket knife I get accused of trying to be Rambo. How the hell do I respond to this, It gets old very fast.

When they call you Rambo just smile and go on your way. If they mean it they will be intimidated, if they are joking they will forgit about it.

I say a 16" WWII or a BAS, I am really likeing my Jewel, and I may need to get a WWII that I can use and not regret doing so. :D

Welcome Randy! Pull up a chair and make yourself at home.

I think that the khukuri for you is the Chitlangi. It comes in two sizes, 18 and 21 inches. It is quick and nimble for its size, in stark contrast to that 19 incher that you traded for. It should make a superb trail knife. One of our forumites here, Howard Wallace, has an Udhaipur that is very similar to the Chitlangi and he has high praise for his knife. Plus, it would make an excellent weapon as it would provide excellent quickness and reach.

On the other hand the BAS is a great knife. It was my first and I still grin every time I pick it up. It is a good size as it is relatively small and very portable, and is able to do some work. Of course you have to remember that what we consider small most people would consider humongous!

You could also try the YCS. It is very beautiful and has the advantage of having two extra useful kardas.

Pick one. You can't lose.

I'll second Dave on the smaller WWII - it is a great all-around knife.
Very few Khukuris will keep you out of the "Rambo" category in some peoples's minds. These are the same guys I used to run with, who swore that a good woodsman never needed a blade longer that 4" to survive in the wilderness. Then, when it got cold and they decided to build a fire, they wanted to borrow my Bowie. Seems all the deadfall had been used except the big limbs and trunks. I also used to hear a lot of"Gee, Don, I forgot tent stakes - could you cut me some?" Our camping trips were in country not much wilder than most city parks, but in the real bush, when you need a big blade, you can't borrow one or "run back home real quick" for one. Best thing is to have it with you, and have one you can trust (HI makes a bunch of 'em).

Thanks for the ideas on the knifes.

I probally take things to personal but you can only hear something so many times before you want to smack someone. when I go in the woods Im usually headed for a small river or stream to hunt for fossils. I really do somtimes need more than a pocket knife to clear a smll trail. I was using a cheap machete but for one thing they dont hold up and two an 18 or 20 inch blade is more than I like to pack around.
Im not trying to be Rambo Ive never even seen the movie. I cant tell you how many times over the past few years Ive heard the Rambo or some simmilar remark.
I realize this is not the right forum for my complaint so I guess I wil just shut up...

Randy,

I think we've all had the Rambo remark directed at us before. I think it sort of comes with the territory when you like big knives. But what's wrong about liking big knives?

Don't fret too much about the size of the YCS or Chitlangi. I don't own either, but I did have a YCS for a few days. Both are quick and nimble blades and are only a few ounces heavier than a BAS.

I too worry about people thinking I'm a knife wielding lunatic. I figure If a knife is needed for some small task I'll pull out the karda.

Welcome to the cantina, Randy.

"when I go in the woods Im usually headed for a small river or stream to hunt for fossils."

Maybe you could get and Indian Jones hat and jacket and change your image?:D

Just joking!

I have always been for a big knife!!!!
And I have said repeatedly here, "that many times when I took a smaller knife into the woods or fields I had the need for my large knife and kicked my arse for not carrying it along. I could always do the same tasks with a larger knife that I could do with a small knife, maybe not as well, but I couldn't do the large task I wanted to do with the small knife."

The khukuri solves the problem nicely because you have a small knife in the karda.:)
Big knives rule!!!!

The knives in the picture I posted above are a HI Uncle Bill Special (UBS), and a Lyle Sly II.

BTW,
Randy welcome to the forums.

Randy, welcome aboard. It is from me that you are getting your AK. If it ain't what you are looking for just send it back instead of what we were going to trade for. It is a big knife and a bit heavy, but you might like it. I like to go hiking and packpacking and I usually bring my BAS. It is just right for most stuff but I want to give a WWII in both sizes a try. If you end up like the rest of us, you will want one of each model, a khukuri for every occasion.

No matter what it looks like I will want to keep the A.K.
Im just looking for another knife to take with me on Trips.

Randy,

And thanks for the trade Bob

Get a special order 28 inch, 7 pound GRS to take on the trips.

Uncle, you'd have to be insaine to try packing that thing on trips, let along use it. Wait, that sounds like me. :D

Randy, you could always stick the khukuri in your pack. A one hand opening folder is faster to deploy than a 16" khukuri (unless you are Ray C.). You could always color the handle with pink glo then it will be trendy and look like any other safety equipment. Like Wal saids the Rambo comment is irritating especially if they latter ask to borrow the knife.

I will also "third" the vote for the 16.5" WWII. The BAS is only 15" which will fit in almost any pack.

Hehe... pink handle. I think they'd think up another name for you instead of Rambo.

What about the pointy scabbard. How do you guys carry your khuk in your pack without worrying about the brass chappe(?) eventually poking through?

If the khukuri will fit in a day pack that is probally how I will start carrying it. However Im not to sure about the pink handle. I dont think that is the message I want to convey around the Deliverence looking gentlemen I run across on the trails down here in sunny Florida.
